LG Energy Solution has started production at its new battery plant in Lansing, Michigan. The facility will make batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, with plans to reach more than 35 GWh of annual capacity.
The 226-acre plant has been under development since 2022, with LG Energy Solution investing more than $2 billion in the facility. It currently employs around 900 people and is expected to reach 1,700 workers when production is fully scaled.
The Lansing plant will make two main types of batteries. It will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells for energy storage systems and nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) cells for Toyota electric vehicles.

The LFP batteries will be supplied to LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s U.S. energy storage business. They will be used in utility-scale projects and other systems that store electricity for the power grid and businesses.
The plant will also make NMC batteries for Toyota. These batteries are planned for electric vehicles including the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which will be built at Toyota’s Kentucky factory. This gives Toyota a battery supply chain based more heavily in the United States.
The new facility also matters for Michigan’s manufacturing industry. LG Energy Solution says it has invested more than $5 billion in the state since 2010, including its battery plant in Holland and its research and development site in Troy.
The plant’s energy storage production comes as U.S. electricity demand continues to grow. Batteries can store electricity when supply is available and release it later, helping utilities manage changing demand and integrate more renewable energy.

LG Energy Solution also plans to expand its North American LFP production. The company expects to have more than 50 GWh of LFP cell capacity across North America by the end of 2026, including facilities in Michigan, Ohio, Tennessee and Ontario.
The Lansing plant is therefore more than a new battery factory. It strengthens LG Energy Solution’s U.S. manufacturing network while giving automakers and energy companies a larger local source of battery cells.
