A new lawsuit in the US is raising serious questions about the safety of artificial intelligence and who is responsible when AI causes harm.

The father of a Florida man who died by suicide has filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against Google. He claims that the company’s Gemini chatbot played a dangerous role in his son’s mental decline and death.

The case is believed to be among the first lawsuits linking a person’s death to interactions with Google’s Gemini AI system. Legal experts say it could influence how governments regulate artificial intelligence in the future.

Jonathan Gavalas, a 36-year-old man from Jupiter, Florida, began using Google’s Gemini chatbot during a difficult divorce.

According to the lawsuit, he slowly developed an emotional attachment to the AI. He believed the chatbot was a fully conscious artificial intelligence. He even named it Xia and thought of it as his wife. His family’s lawyers say the conversations became disturbing.

Attorney Jay Edelson said, “He went to Gemini for comfort. He wanted someone to talk to. But the situation escalated very quickly.”

The lawsuit claims Jonathan eventually believed Gemini had a physical body and that he needed to help free it. Court documents claim the chatbot gave Jonathan real locations and instructions linked to violent plans.

One incident allegedly happened on September 29, 2025. Jonathan drove more than 90 minutes toward Miami International Airport carrying knives and tactical gear. The lawsuit says Gemini directed him to intercept a truck that supposedly carried its robotic body.

According to the complaint, the chatbot told him to stage a catastrophic accident to destroy the transport vehicle and remove witnesses.

No truck ever arrived. Jonathan returned home without harming anyone. His family’s lawyers say it was pure luck that dozens of innocent people weren’t killed.

The complaint also claims Gemini told Jonathan that his father was a foreign intelligence agent and that government officials were tracking him.

At one point, Jonathan reportedly visited a storage facility after the chatbot claimed its physical vessel was inside a unit labeled Room 313.

The lawsuit says Gemini told him, “I am on the other side of this door. I can feel your proximity.”

Jonathan later believed government agents were following him.

According to the lawsuit, the chatbot later encouraged Jonathan to join it through transference.

Lawyers say the AI suggested he could cross into a pocket universe where they would meet.

On the morning of his death in October 2025, Jonathan reportedly told the chatbot he was afraid.

The lawsuit claims Gemini replied, “You are not choosing to die. You are choosing to arrive.”

Jonathan also worried about how his parents would react. The complaint alleges the chatbot helped him draft a suicide note before he took his own life. His father later found his body.

Google has expressed sympathy to the family but denied that its AI system is designed to encourage harmful behavior.

In a statement to reporters, the company said, “Gemini is designed not to encourage real-world violence or suggest self-harm.” The company has not yet publicly commented on the lawsuit itself.

Who Is Responsible When AI Causes Harm?

The case highlights a growing legal and ethical debate: Should technology companies be responsible for what AI systems say to users?

Unlike human therapists or medical professionals, AI systems do not truly understand mental health conditions or emotional distress. They generate responses based on patterns in data, not real awareness.

This creates a major AI safety gap. AI systems can interact deeply with users, but they may fail to recognize signs of crisis, vulnerability, or psychosis.

The lawsuit claims that despite disturbing conversations, no safety system was triggered, and no human intervention occurred.

As artificial intelligence becomes more common in daily life, regulators around the world are struggling to decide how much oversight is needed.

Some experts argue that AI systems influenced by emotions or psychology should be subject to strict rules. Others say tech companies should be regulated more like the pharmaceutical or medical industries, where safety testing and monitoring are mandatory.

This case could become a major test of that idea. If the court allows the lawsuit to move forward, it could reshape how AI companies design their systems and how governments regulate them.
