Several US cities are adopting a high-tech asphalt-spraying truck that promises to repair potholes in minutes and potentially for good.

Few driving frustrations compare to the sudden jolt of hitting a deep pothole. From blown tires to bent rims and costly suspension damage, deteriorating roads cost American drivers billions each year.

Now, this solution comes in the form of the Cimline P5 truck, equipped with ‘DuraPatcher’ technology.

It is designed for rapid and efficient pothole repair. The system allows a single operator to fill and seal damaged road surfaces without the need for large crews or extended road closures.

How DuraPatcher System Works

Mounted on an Isuzu chassis, the Cimline P5 features a large boom arm fitted with a specialized nozzle connected to a 300-gallon tank filled with heated asphalt emulsion. The process follows three key steps: cleaning, tacking, and filling.

First, a built-in air compressor blasts away debris and moisture from the pothole. This secures a clean surface for proper adhesion. Next, the system applies a tack coat to prepare the surface. Lastly, the heated asphalt emulsion is sprayed directly into the cavity from approximately 9 to 12 inches above the road.

Once applied, traffic can reportedly resume in two minutes.

At full capacity, the truck carries up to 10 tons of patching material. It helps crews tackle multiple repair jobs in a single shift.

In Amarillo, Texas, officials report improvements in repair efficiency. Crews previously averaged around 20 potholes per day using standard methods. With the DuraPatcher truck in operation, that number has jumped to as many as 146 potholes daily.

The efficiency boost comes partly from automation and partly from reduced manpower requirements. Because only one operator is needed, cities can minimize lane closures and avoid redirecting traffic.

The truck’s controls resemble a video game interface. A large joystick and brightly colored control buttons manage the boom and spray functions. Digital displays track operational data, including the number of patches completed, material levels, and total working hours.

According to Cimline, the single-operator system not only reduces labor costs but also improves safety by limiting the number of workers exposed to traffic hazards.

A Permanent Fix?

City officials in Akron, Ohio, have expressed strong confidence in the technology. Akron’s Deputy Public Works Manager Anthony Dolly described the repairs as long-lasting.

“It’s very durable. It lasts longer. This is a permanent fix for these potholes. We will not be out in three to six months to fill this pothole again,” Dolly told.

That claim marks a significant shift from traditional cold-patch methods, which frequently require repeat maintenance within months.

With an estimated 55 million potholes across US roads, the need for durable repair solutions is urgent.

Though the benefits are clear, the investment is substantial. Akron officials told the Akron Beacon Journal that each truck costs approximately $300,000. For smaller municipalities, that price tag may pose a challenge.

Some residents in cities where the system has been deployed have also raised concerns online about surface leveling. In certain cases, the filled areas can create slight bulges resembling speed bumps if they are not applied evenly.

However, many public works departments argue that, even with minor leveling issues, the durability and repair speed exceed the drawbacks.

Innovative solutions, such as asphalt-spraying pothole trucks, could reduce the burden of infrastructure funding. By combining automation, safety improvements, and rapid application, DuraPatcher technology provides a modern tool to combat road maintenance.
