Doughnut Airship Redefines Flight With Silent, Precise Design Twist

A strange new aircraft shaped like a doughnut is drawing global attention. But this unusual design is not just for looks. It is built with a clear purpose to offer a quieter, cleaner, and more efficient way to fly.

The aircraft is called the aérOnde, which means ‘Air-Round.’ It is developed by a French company led by designer and CEO Jérôme Delamare.

At first glance, it may remind many people of a floating doughnut, something even fans of The Simpsons might find amusing. But unlike the fictional and often chaotic designs seen in the show, this airship is carefully engineered for real-world use.

The aérOnde stands out because of its toroidal, or ring-shaped, structure. This circular design is not just creative. It helps the airship stay stable in the air. Strong winds have less impact on it compared to traditional balloon-shaped airships. Even in gusts of up to 70 km/h, it can maintain better control and balance.

One of the most important features of the aérOnde is its clean energy system. It runs entirely on electric motors. Instead of burning fuel for lift, it uses helium gas. Around 400 cubic meters of helium help it rise vertically, making it an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

This design makes it far more environmentally friendly than conventional aircraft. Airplanes today are responsible for about 2.4 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions.

In contrast, the aérOnde produces almost no emissions during flight. Its energy use is also extremely low. It consumes just 1 kWh of electricity per hour. This is a huge difference compared to helicopters, which can burn around 180 liters of fuel in the same time.

Despite its compact size, about 15 meters wide, the airship is capable of performing serious tasks. It can carry a payload of up to 200 kilograms. It also supports a two-person crew. The aircraft can remain in the air for up to 5 hours and reach speeds of 25-30 km/h.

The aérOnde uses three sets of four propellers each. These allow it to move smoothly in all directions. Pilots control it using a simple joystick, making it easy to maneuver even in tight spaces.

Another key feature is its open cockpit. Unlike traditional enclosed cabins, this design is more like a ski lift seat. It allows crew members to directly access structures while in the air. This makes it especially useful for tasks such as repairing power lines, maintaining cable systems, or working on tall transmission towers.

The airship’s quiet operation adds to its appeal. It produces almost no noise, making it suitable for sensitive environments. It can be used for observation, surveillance, and even rescue missions without causing disturbance.

Emergency and medical operations are another area where the aérOnde shows strong potential. Its ability to hover steadily, land vertically, and operate quietly makes it ideal for reaching difficult locations.

Charging the airship is also quick and practical. It takes only a few hours to recharge, allowing it to return to service without long delays.

The project has already gained recognition. It won France’s i-Lab competition, which supports innovative technologies. The development also draws from research conducted at the Grenoble Electrical Engineering Laboratory (G2ELab).

For now, the aérOnde is available for demonstration flights in France. A short 20-minute ride costs around €200. While pricing for purchase or long-term use has not been shared, the aircraft is already creating strong interest.

The aérOnde may look playful, but it represents a serious step forward in aviation. With its unique design, low energy use, and precise control, it offers a glimpse of a cleaner, more flexible future of flight.
