BAE Systems has introduced a new spacecraft, Ascent, to expand its growing space portfolio.
The platform is built to support both space defense and exploration missions. It also strengthens the company’s Elevation spacecraft product line.
The Ascent spacecraft is designed for flexible and dynamic operations in space. It features advanced maneuverability, including high-thrust propulsion and in-orbit refueling. These capabilities allow it to carry multiple payloads and adapt to different mission needs.

Company executive Thai Sheridan said the new platform adds strong mobility and logistics capabilities. He explained that Ascent helps address emerging challenges in cislunar space while supporting multiple mission types. He added that the spacecraft is built as a highly maneuverable and versatile system.
The spacecraft can also support exploration missions beyond Earth. It can transport and deploy small satellites and cargo to the Moon and other orbits. It is capable of hosting scientific instruments and payloads in lunar missions.

According to Bonnie Patterson, Ascent can act as a ‘space tug’ to move cargo between orbits. She said this will improve support for exploration and space science missions. She also highlighted its role in enabling future lunar operations.
Ascent includes rideshare capability to carry multiple payloads on a single launch. This approach improves mission flexibility and reduces costs. It can operate across low Earth orbit, medium Earth orbit, geostationary orbit, and beyond.
The platform joins other spacecraft in the Elevation line, including the Summit spacecraft and Trek spacecraft. Together, these systems offer standardized, high-performing options for various missions. They are backed by decades of experience in space programs.

Brad Shogrin said the new addition strengthens the company’s ability to meet rising demand. He noted that Ascent supports integrated programs, including payloads, spacecraft systems, and ground operations. He added that the company aims to deliver reliable solutions at speed and scale.
BAE Systems plans to deliver the first Ascent pathfinder spacecraft by 2027. This milestone will mark the start of its operational journey. The company sees it as a key step toward future space mobility and exploration missions.
