Wing Aviation LLC and Walmart are launching an ambitious nationwide expansion, planning to bring drone delivery services to 150 more Walmart stores in the next year. This move will make on-demand aerial delivery accessible to more than 40 million Americans, reported The Robot Report, signaling a major leap in retail convenience.
Imagine realizing you’re out of milk just as dinner is simmering. Instead of a frantic drive to the store, you tap your phone and a drone whisks it to your doorstep in minutes. This futuristic scenario is rapidly becoming an everyday reality for millions, thanks to a massive new partnership expansion. Walmart and Alphabet-owned Wing are dramatically scaling their drone delivery network, aiming to establish over 270 drone delivery locations by 2027, stretching from the suburbs of Los Angeles to the neighborhoods of Miami.
The initial wave of this expansion will launch in major metropolitan hubs including Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami, with additional cities to be announced. This isn’t a small pilot program anymore; it’s a full-scale commercial rollout built on proven success. Wing has been operating in the Dallas-Fort Worth area since December 2024 and in Metro Atlanta since December 2025. In these markets, the service has gained impressive traction, particularly with repeat customers. Wing reported that its top 25% of customers order an average of three times per week, and in the last half of 2025, delivery volumes grew by three times compared to the first half of the year.

“Drone delivery plays an important role in our ability to deliver what customers want, exactly when they want it,” said Greg Cathey, senior vice president of digital fulfillment transformation at Walmart. He emphasized the service’s role in solving last-minute needs, whether it’s a missing dinner ingredient or a late-night essential for a busy family. “By expanding drone delivery to new major metro areas, we are helping more customers solve for their last-minute needs faster than ever before,” Cathey stated, according to The Robot Report.
For Wing CEO Adam Woodworth, this expansion is the culmination of years spent refining technology and integrating seamlessly with retailer operations. “We’ve spent years building our technology to ensure that when you realize you’re out of eggs or need over-the-counter medicine, the solution is just a few taps away,” Woodworth said. He highlighted the partnership with Walmart as proof that delivering critical, everyday items in minutes makes a tangible difference for families. Wing’s lightweight drones operate under U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines, flying Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) within a 6-mile (9.6 km) radius of partner stores, and have completed more than 400,000 commercial deliveries worldwide.

It’s important to note that Wing is not Walmart’s only aerial partner; the retail giant is pursuing a multi-provider strategy. For instance, Zipline launched its Platform 2 (P2) drone system at Walmart stores in Texas last year. However, Wing’s upcoming expansion is particularly aggressive, with a service launch in Houston slated for January 15 and plans still active for other previously announced cities like Charlotte and Tampa. This nationwide build-out represents a fundamental shift in how we think about instant gratification. It’s moving beyond same-day delivery to same-minute delivery, transforming local retail logistics and setting a new standard for convenience that could soon be as commonplace as curbside pickup.
