A pair of unusual Chinese-made Hongqi SUVs became the center of attention during former US President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Beijing.
The vehicles featured massive custom-built oversized roof structures, unlike anything previously seen in official motorcades.
Videos of the convoy quickly spread online and drew strong interest from defense and automotive observers.
Their appearance has triggered questions about advanced security systems, communications technology and China’s evolving VIP protection capabilities. The US Secret Service confirmed that it did not operate the unusual vehicles.
However, officials did not say whether the SUVs belonged to the US Embassy in Beijing or Chinese authorities. Both countries regularly deploy large security teams and special vehicles during high-level diplomatic visits.
The modified SUVs are based on current-generation Hongqi models. Hongqi is China’s best-known luxury government vehicle brand and is often compared to Cadillac in the US. Chinese leaders and senior officials have used the brand for decades during official ceremonies and state events.

The giant roof structures immediately attracted attention because of their unusual size. Analysts believe the added height creates space for heavy or oversized equipment inside the vehicles. The exact purpose of the systems remains unknown.
Some observers believe that the SUVs could carry advanced communications systems. Others think that the vehicles may support electronic warfare tools designed to block drones or jam radio signals. Modern VIP security operations focus on countering drone attacks and electronic surveillance.
The SUVs also appeared heavily loaded as they moved through the streets of Beijing. The rear suspension sat noticeably lower, suggesting the vehicles were carrying very heavy equipment. A hidden lift system or power equipment may also be mounted in the rear section.
No visible windows, firing ports, or weapon openings were seen on the roof structures. This has increased speculation that the systems inside are electronic rather than defensive weapons. Security experts note that discreet technology is now common in presidential protection vehicles worldwide.
Advanced Security Vehicles Joined Trump Convoy
The Hongqi SUVs were not the only modified vehicles seen during the visit. A Chevrolet Suburban, a Lincoln Navigator, and a Ford E-series van also carried unusual rooftop systems. All of them displayed Chinese license plates while operating inside the convoy.
The Lincoln Navigator carried a smaller roof-mounted structure. It also appeared to include antennas and a small optical sensor mounted near the front roofline. Similar systems are often used for communications, surveillance, or electronic monitoring.

Chinese police Ford F-150 pickup trucks with similar rooftop equipment were also visible nearby. Those vehicles appeared to use matching sensor systems during security operations in Beijing. Their presence suggested coordinated protective technology across multiple vehicles.
The Chevrolet Suburban featured a raised roof packed with antennas. One antenna had an X-shaped design, a common design in satellite communication systems. Similar vehicles are often used by the White House Communications Agency during US presidential travel.
These communication vehicles are sometimes called ‘Roadrunners’ inside US presidential security operations. They help maintain secure communications between the president, military units, and government agencies. Reliable communication remains critical during overseas diplomatic visits.
The Suburban also carried a black license plate with white lettering. This type of registration is sometimes connected to foreign-owned vehicles operating in China. That detail has raised questions about whether the SUV belonged to US diplomatic personnel stationed in Beijing.
The Ford E-series van also featured a heavily modified roof section. Work lights surrounded the roof edges, while emergency lights sat near the front. The van may have supported emergency response teams or mobile command operations during the visit.
Rising Focus on Motorcade Protection Technology
Modern presidential motorcades now operate like mobile security networks. Vehicles often carry electronic defense systems, encrypted communication tools, and advanced monitoring equipment. Governments are investing in protection technologies as security threats continue evolving.
Drone attacks have become a major concern for world leaders in recent years. Small unmanned aircraft can carry cameras, tracking devices, or explosives. This has forced security agencies to develop stronger counter-drone systems for official convoys and public events.

China has swiftly expanded its investment in military and electronic warfare technologies over the past decade. The appearance of these unusual Hongqi SUVs reflects that larger modernization effort. Beijing showcases advanced domestic technology during high-profile international visits.
Specialized vehicles have long been part of presidential motorcades around the world. The US regularly deploys heavily modified limousines, communication trucks, and armored support vehicles. Russia, China, and several European nations also operate customized protection fleets for national leaders.
The mystery surrounding the Hongqi SUVs remains unresolved for now. However, their appearance during Trump’s Beijing visit has highlighted how fast VIP security technology is changing. Future diplomatic visits to China will reveal more details about the systems hidden inside these unusual vehicles.
