Serbia Starts China-Backed Humanoid Robot Production in Europe

Serbia has started production at its first robot factory in the western city of Sabac. The China-Serbia project, built by Minth Group and Chinese robotics company AgiBot, is being described as Europe’s first mass-production base for humanoid robots backed by Chinese companies.

The factory began operations on Saturday, with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic attending the launch. The first humanoid robot made at the site also rolled off the production line that day.

The robot demonstrated several tasks during the launch, including Chinese calligraphy, folding clothes, playing chess, and dancing. Vučić said the project could help Serbia develop new skills and strengthen its role in Europe’s growing robotics industry.

The first phase of the factory represents an investment of 20 million euros and covers about 3,000 square meters. It focuses on assembling humanoid robots and robotic dogs, while also testing their movement, vision systems, and overall performance.

The robots use AI and multiple sensors to understand their surroundings. Their fingertips include touch and sensing systems that help them control force and handle objects more carefully.

The factory’s robots are already being developed for industrial work. They can be used for loading and unloading, moving materials, and inspections, especially in jobs that are repetitive or potentially dangerous for human workers.

The project is planned to grow beyond the first factory. A future robotics industrial park could bring total investment to about 200 million euros, with annual production capacity eventually reaching up to 20,000 robots, including humanoid robots and robotic dogs.

The factory still has a long way to go before humanoid robots become common across Europe. Its planned capacity is much larger than current production, and many potential uses, including healthcare, agriculture, homes, and eldercare, will require further development and testing.

Minth Group has already built a manufacturing presence in Serbia. The company entered the country in 2018 and now operates 10 factories there, giving the robotics project access to an existing industrial and supply-chain network.

Experts told the Global Times that the project could help move humanoid robots from research labs into real factories. Serbia’s location in the Balkans and its existing manufacturing links could also make it a useful base for serving wider European markets.

The project could also create demand for local engineers and skilled workers. If production expands as planned, Serbia could gain experience in AI, robotics, automation, and advanced manufacturing while becoming a link between Chinese technology and European demand.

For China and Serbia, the factory represents a move toward deeper cooperation in advanced manufacturing. For Europe, it adds new local production capacity at a time when companies are looking for practical ways to bring humanoid robots into industrial work.
