Chinese Naval Hospital Ship Sets Sail for South China Sea Medical Mission

China’s Naval Hospital Ship Silk Road Ark
China's hospital ship Silk Road Ark begins a new South China Sea medical mission after completing a 234-day overseas voyage.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship Silk Road Ark left a military port in Zhanjiang on Sunday.

The vessel is heading to islands in the South China Sea and locations along China’s southern coastline. Its mission is to provide medical support and healthcare services.

Medical teams on board will offer consultations and physical examinations. They will also provide traditional Chinese medicine therapies, surgical procedures, and health education programs. The services are aimed at officers, soldiers, and their family members stationed in remote areas.

The mission also includes emergency response training activities. Crew members will conduct casualty treatment drills during the deployment. Technical teams will inspect and maintain medical equipment to ensure operational readiness.

China’s Second 10,000-Tonne Hospital Ship

Silk Road Ark entered service in 2024. It is China’s second domestically designed and built ocean-going hospital ship in the 10,000-tonne class. These large medical vessels serve as floating hospitals, delivering healthcare far from mainland medical facilities.

Hospital ships play an important role in military and humanitarian operations. They can provide treatment during emergencies, natural disasters, and long-distance deployments. Their mobility allows medical services to reach isolated regions where healthcare access is limited.

The addition of the Silk Road Ark has expanded the PLA Navy’s medical support capabilities. The vessel enhances China’s ability to provide healthcare at sea and to support personnel stationed in remote locations. It also increases the country’s capacity for international medical outreach missions.

Overseas Voyage Demonstrated Medical Capacity

Before starting this new mission, Silk Road Ark completed a 234-day overseas deployment in April. During that voyage, the ship visited Nauru, Fiji, Tonga, Jamaica, Barbados, and Papua New Guinea. The mission combined medical assistance with international engagement activities.

According to official figures, the medical team handled 26,324 outpatient visits during the journey. Doctors also carried out 2,724 surgical operations aboard the ship. The numbers highlight the vessel’s ability to deliver large-scale medical care while operating far from home ports.

The latest deployment shows China’s continued investment in maritime medical support capabilities. As Silk Road Ark carries out its mission in the South China Sea, the ship is expected to strengthen healthcare access for personnel in remote areas while supporting broader naval readiness and humanitarian response efforts.
