In the early hours of April 10, a quiet neighborhood in San Francisco was shaken by a disturbing act of violence.

A man walked up to Sam Altman’s home, the chief executive of OpenAI, carrying a burning Molotov cocktail. Within seconds, he threw it at the house and fled into the darkness.

The attack happened around 3:45 a.m. Surveillance cameras later showed the suspect calmly approaching the gate before launching the firebomb.

The explosive hit the building but caused only minor damage. No one inside the house was hurt. Altman later confirmed this himself, sharing that his family, including his infant daughter, was safe. But the incident did not end there.

Less than two hours later, the same man appeared outside OpenAI’s headquarters, about five kilometers away. Armed with kerosene, a lighter, and what authorities described as an anti-AI manifesto, he tried to break into the building. He even attempted to smash the entrance using a chair. Security staff quickly intervened and stopped him before he could cause further harm.

The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Daniel Moreno-Gama, was arrested soon after by police. Authorities say he had traveled all the way from a suburb near Houston, Texas, to carry out the attack. When officers searched him, they found incendiary materials and documents filled with strong anti-AI messages.

Investigators say the manifesto contained three sections. One part, titled “Your Last Warning,” listed AI leaders and threatened violence against them. Another section spoke about the “destruction of humanity” by artificial intelligence. The final section directly addressed Altman, urging him to see survival as a chance to “redeem himself.”

The language was intense. It reflected fear, anger, and a deep sense of urgency.

Authorities have charged Moreno-Gama with serious crimes, including attempted arson and attempted murder. If convicted, he could face life in prison. His arraignment is scheduled for May 5, and he remains in custody without bail.

However, the case has also raised complex questions about mental health and the growing emotional impact of artificial intelligence.

Moreno-Gama’s parents released a statement saying their son had been going through a mental health crisis before the incident. They described him as a young man who had recently struggled with severe emotional distress.

His public defender argued that the case is being exaggerated. She stated that her client has a history of autism and mental illness and no prior criminal record. According to her, this was not a planned act of terror, but the result of a psychological breakdown.

“This is a property crime, not an act of terror,” she said, challenging the strong language used by authorities.

Still, federal officials see it differently. They have described the attack as a serious escalation of threats against the technology sector. A representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said they will not tolerate violence against innovation leaders. Prosecutors also stated that if the attack was meant to influence policy or create fear, it could be treated as domestic terrorism.

The incident did not remain isolated. Just two days later, police arrested two individuals who allegedly fired shots from a car outside Altman’s home. Though they were later released without charges, the investigation is still ongoing. These events point to a rising tension around artificial intelligence.

AI is no longer just a tool. It has become a powerful force shaping jobs, creativity, decision-making, and even human identity. While many see it as progress, others view it as a threat.
