IBM Unveils Dual-Architecture Processor for Z and LinuxONE Systems

IBM has announced a new processor designed to run both IBM Z and Arm instructions on the same chip. The processor is being developed for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems, giving businesses access to Arm-based Linux applications while keeping the security and reliability features of IBM’s enterprise platforms.

The processor is the first major chip milestone from IBM’s collaboration with Arm, announced in April 2026. It is designed to let companies run Arm-native Linux alongside z/OS and Linux workloads on IBM Z and LinuxONE systems.

The move addresses a growing need for businesses to run different types of software on the same infrastructure. Arm has a large software ecosystem used across cloud, edge and AI applications, while IBM Z is widely used for transaction processing and data-heavy enterprise workloads.

The new chip is built using a 2-nanometer process and will have 11 high-performance cores running at more than 5.7 GHz. It will also include AI inference accelerators, a dedicated data processing unit for faster I/O and a large cache for demanding workloads.

Unlike a system that uses separate Arm and IBM processor cores, IBM says each core is designed to execute Arm and IBM Z or LinuxONE instructions natively. This means different workloads can run concurrently while the platform continues to provide features such as encryption, fault detection and recovery.

According to IBM, the processor will bring Arm-native Linux applications to systems that can scale to hundreds of cores and tens of terabytes of memory. This could help enterprises use newer cloud-native and AI software without moving mission-critical workloads to a completely different platform.

Christian Jacobi, Chief Technology Officer and IBM Fellow, IBM Systems Development, said the processor is intended to give organizations more flexibility as they modernize applications and add AI to business operations. Arm also sees the partnership as a way to bring its growing software ecosystem into highly regulated and mission-critical computing environments.

The processor is still under development, so IBM has not announced final commercial availability or detailed performance results. The company also notes that statements about its future technology plans may change.

The announcement marks an important step in IBM and Arm’s effort to combine two computing architectures in enterprise systems. If delivered as planned, the technology could give businesses more choice in running Arm-based AI and Linux applications while continuing to use IBM Z and LinuxONE for critical workloads.
