France has awarded Airbus Defence and Space a contract to equip the A400M with a new multi-mission capability package.

The upgrade will transform the transport aircraft into an airborne command-and-control platform while enhancing its intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. The project is centered on Airbus’ new Parallel Mission System (PMS).

The PMS will add a mission management system inside the aircraft’s cargo hold. This system will allow operators to control remotely deployed effectors, including future unmanned systems. New tactical workstations will also help crews monitor sensor feeds and coordinate operations in real time.

Airbus said the new architecture is designed to support additional sensors and communication equipment in the future. This gives the aircraft greater flexibility as military requirements continue to evolve. The upgrade will also improve the aircraft’s ability to share information across different operational domains.

A400M Gains Stronger ISR

One of the key additions is an optronic sensor that will strengthen the aircraft’s ISR capabilities. These sensors can capture and process visual information, helping operators monitor activities on the ground and in the air. Better situational awareness enables commanders to make faster, more informed decisions.

The upgrade builds on earlier Airbus plans to turn the A400M into a high-bandwidth communications hub. Previously, the aircraft relied mainly on narrowband communications for voice and limited data transmission. The new system will enable faster data sharing between aircraft, ground forces, and unmanned platforms.

Airbus also sees the A400M playing a larger role in future network-centric warfare. Enhanced communications will support cooperation between manned and unmanned systems operating in different environments. The aircraft is also being considered for electronic warfare missions and the deployment of remote carriers.

Deployment Timeline

The first upgraded French A400M is scheduled to receive the PMS kit in 2027. Flight testing is expected to begin in 2028, followed by the gradual introduction of the capability across the French Air and Space Force fleet. France currently operates 25 A400M aircraft, having received its first unit in 2013.

The A400M was originally designed to perform both strategic and tactical airlift missions. Powered by four Europrop TP400-D6 turboprop engines, it can carry up to 37 tonnes of cargo and fly distances of up to 8,700 kilometers. The aircraft can also operate from short and unprepared runways, making it suitable for a wide range of missions.

Airbus is exploring several additional upgrades for the platform. These include long-range jamming systems, drone and missile deployments from the air, increased payload capacity of up to 40 tonnes, and firefighting missions.

As these capabilities mature, the A400M is set to evolve from a transport aircraft into a versatile airborne operations platform that will support future military requirements.
