China’s Y-20B military transport aircraft can reportedly switch between transport and aerial refueling missions. A CCTV documentary also highlighted its potential to support other roles, including electronic warfare and airborne early warning.
The Y-20B is part of China’s domestically developed Y-20 aircraft family. The aircraft uses China’s WS-20 turbofan engine, which Chinese state media has described as the aircraft’s “Chinese heart.”
The new engine gives the Y-20B more power, better fuel efficiency and longer range, according to Chinese military media. The CCTV documentary said the aircraft can be fitted with refueling equipment to turn it into an aerial tanker.

The basic idea is to use the Y-20B as a flexible platform instead of building a separate aircraft for every mission. Refueling pods can support tanker operations, while other equipment could potentially be used for electronic warfare or other special missions.
Global Times quoted Chinese military affairs expert Song Zhongping as saying the Y-20B represents a multi-role tanker transport concept. He said different pods and equipment could allow the aircraft to perform different tasks while keeping its main transport function.
The aircraft could have several practical uses for the PLA Air Force. A transport aircraft can move troops and equipment during normal operations, while tanker equipment can help refuel other aircraft and extend their time in the air.
There are limits to the idea. The documentary and expert comments describe some roles as possible future configurations, rather than showing that every Y-20B can already perform all of them. Dedicated missions such as airborne early warning or electronic warfare could require major structural and electronic changes.
The Y-20 entered PLA Air Force service in 2016 and has since developed into a wider aircraft family. According to the aircraft’s manufacturer, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the family now includes the Y-20A, Y-20B and YU-20 tanker, showing how one basic design can support several military needs.

The development matters because flexible aircraft can give an air force more options when missions change. If China continues to add modular equipment to the Y-20B platform, it could expand the PLA Air Force’s transport, refueling and special-mission capabilities without relying on completely different aircraft designs.
