RIKEN Scientists Create Plant-Based Plastic That Fully Degrades in Saltwater, Leaving Zero Microplastics
RIKEN Center scientists in Japan developed a plant-based plastic from cellulose that is as strong as conventional plastic but fully degrades in seawater in hours without microplastics. Led by Professor Takuzo Aida, the material is tunable from rigid to stretchable (130% elasticity) using safe, FDA-approved ingredients.
