DOE approves Natura Resources' nuclear safety agreement, advancing the first US liquid-fueled molten salt reactor project.

Natura Resources announced that the US Department of Energy has approved the Nuclear Safety Design Agreement (NSDA) for its demonstration molten salt reactor.

The reactor is being developed at Abilene Christian University in Texas. The approval represents a major milestone in the company’s effort to deploy an advanced liquid-fueled nuclear reactor in the US.

The NSDA establishes the framework for cooperation between Natura and the Department of Energy during the reactor’s development. It aligns design requirements, safety reviews, regulatory planning, and other technical decisions. These steps support federal authorization to build and operate the nuclear facility.

Safety Process Explained

Molten salt reactors use liquid fuel instead of the solid fuel found in most conventional nuclear power plants. This design is intended to improve operational flexibility while supporting advanced safety features. Before construction begins, developers must complete detailed safety reviews and meet strict regulatory requirements.

Natura CEO Jordan Robison said the agreement moves the company from the design stage toward deployment.

He added that years of engineering work and regulatory preparation have positioned Natura to continue through the Department of Energy’s authorization process while meeting established nuclear safety standards. The company will now provide technical and safety information as DOE continues its review.

Molten Salt Design Advances

The Department of Energy’s authorization process follows many of the same principles used by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission for commercial reactor licensing. It includes preliminary and final safety analyses before approval for construction and operation. This approach helps ensure that new reactor technologies meet established safety expectations.

Natura is developing its demonstration reactor under Department of Energy oversight while preparing separate commercial reactor projects for Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing. Pre-application work with the NRC is already underway. Running both efforts at the same time is intended to shorten the overall path to commercial deployment.

Commercial Plans Advance

The company said it is combining early regulatory engagement with private investment and detailed safety planning to speed up project development. This strategy aims to reduce delays that have historically affected first-of-a-kind nuclear technologies. It also supports broader efforts to expand advanced nuclear energy in the US.

Advanced nuclear reactors are attracting growing interest as countries seek reliable, low-carbon sources of electricity. Progress on projects like Natura’s demonstration reactor may help shape future licensing pathways and accelerate the commercialization of next-generation nuclear technologies.
