General Fusion has taken another step toward commercializing fusion energy by signing a framework agreement with Italian renewable energy company Renexia.
The partnership focuses on developing one or more fusion power plants in Italy using General Fusion’s Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology.
Renexia, part of the Toto Group, is known for developing renewable energy projects. The agreement supports Italy’s clean energy goals while expanding General Fusion’s plans to bring fusion power to international markets.
The partnership establishes a milestone-based roadmap for future cooperation. Both companies will work together on site selection, project development, financing, construction, and the commissioning of one or more fusion power plants. Each phase will move forward only after agreed milestones are completed.
The first stage focuses on evaluating suitable locations for future facilities. The companies will also examine commercial opportunities, electricity offtake agreements, permitting requirements, and construction planning. Initial work on site feasibility is expected to begin immediately.
Further development activities are planned to begin in 2026 after both companies finalize additional agreements. These agreements will define the responsibilities and conditions for each project phase. The framework gives both partners flexibility while advancing long-term planning.
General Fusion Chief Executive Officer Greg Twinney said the agreement represents another step in bringing Canadian-developed fusion technology to international markets.
He said Renexia’s experience in the energy sector will help support commercial deployment in Italy. Twinney added that the partnership will strengthen engagement with key stakeholders as the technology moves closer to commercialization.

Renexia Chief Executive Officer Riccardo Toto said the company has worked with General Fusion for several years through its Market Development Advisory Committee.
He said fusion energy has the potential to become an important part of future electricity generation. Toto also noted that Italy’s high electricity prices make affordable clean energy technologies increasingly valuable.
Fusion Energy Powers Italy
General Fusion is developing a technology known as Magnetized Target Fusion(MTF). Unlike several other fusion approaches, MTF does not depend on massive superconducting magnets or extremely powerful laser systems. Instead, it combines magnetized plasma with mechanical compression inside a specially designed chamber.
The company believes this design can simplify construction while reducing costs. It also allows engineers to use more widely available industrial materials for future power plants. The goal is to make fusion energy practical for large-scale electricity generation.
Fusion works by combining light atomic nuclei to release enormous amounts of energy. This is the same process that powers the Sun and other stars. Scientists have pursued commercial fusion for decades because it promises carbon-free electricity with very low long-term fuel requirements.
General Fusion reached another milestone in early 2025 with the launch of its Lawson Machine 26(LM26). The company designed, built, and began operating the demonstration machine in less than two years. It is the first commercially relevant demonstration system built for the company’s MTF technology.
LM26 mechanically compresses plasma using a liquid lithium liner. The machine operates at about half the diameter planned for future commercial power plants. This allows engineers to test critical systems before building larger facilities.
The demonstration program aims to achieve several technical targets. These include heating plasma to 10 million degrees Celsius, then reaching 100 million degrees Celsius. The final objective is to achieve the Lawson criterion, a scientific condition in which fusion reactions generate enough energy to sustain net energy production within the plasma.
Commercial Expansion
General Fusion continues to expand both its technology program and its commercial partnerships. Its Market Development Advisory Committee includes energy experts and industry leaders from North America, Europe, and Asia. The committee helps shape future fusion power plants based on customer and market needs.

The Italy agreement comes as electricity demand worldwide continues to grow. Many countries are investing in advanced energy technologies to strengthen energy security while reducing carbon emissions. Fusion energy has attracted increasing attention because it produces no greenhouse gas emissions during electricity generation.
General Fusion is also preparing to become a publicly traded company. The company previously announced plans to merge with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, a Nasdaq-listed special purpose acquisition company. After the transaction closes, the combined company is expected to operate under the name General Fusion Group Ltd.
The new agreement with Renexia gives General Fusion another opportunity to demonstrate how fusion energy can move from laboratory development to commercial electricity production.
If project milestones continue as planned, Italy could become one of the first countries to host commercial Magnetized Target Fusion power plants. The partnership also reflects the growing international effort to develop reliable, carbon-free energy sources for future electricity needs.
