An unusual incident at a university event in China, where a humanoid robot malfunction led it to unexpectedly hug a student during a live performance, has sparked fresh debate over AI safety and human-robot interaction in public spaces.

The incident occurred during the opening ceremony of a sports meet at Xi’an Eurasia University in Shaanxi Province. The performance featured a coordinated dance between a humanoid robot and members of a student club.

The event was designed to bring innovation into campus cultural activities and showcase new forms of human-technology interaction. However, things did not go as planned.

A video from the event, widely shared online, shows the robot suddenly veering from its intended path and embracing a female student standing nearby. The moment came as a surprise to both performers and organizers. On-site staff quickly stepped in and pulled the robot away from the student.

Fortunately, the student was not injured. According to Global Times reports, she later declined requests for media interviews.

The unexpected action quickly drew attention on social media. Many users began speculating about what caused the robot to behave this way. Some questioned whether the machine had developed a form of independent awareness, while others suggested it may have been controlled remotely or even staged as part of the performance.

University officials rejected those claims. A staff member explained that the action was not part of the program. “Based on what we understood at the time, the robot made a mistake,” the staff member said. They added that the issue was linked to a malfunction in the robot’s AI system, which caused it to deviate from its programmed sequence.

The robot used in the performance was supplied by a company founded by university alumni. After the event, it was returned to the company for further review.

According to the company, the issue may have been caused by signal interference at the venue. Multiple drones were operating simultaneously during the event, which may have disrupted communication signals and affected the robot’s behavior. The company stated clearly that the movement was not pre-arranged.

Experts have also weighed in on the incident, urging caution in interpreting such events. Gao Huan, deputy director of the Intelligent and Cognitive Laboratory at Chongqing Normal University, said there is no evidence that the robot showed any form of independent awareness.

He explained that robots used in performances rely on preset motion programs. These systems guide their movements based on timing, positioning, and coordination with human performers.

Gao pointed out several possible causes for the incident. These include errors in positioning, problems in recognizing movement, or failures in executing programmed sequences. He also noted that human performers moving slightly off their expected positions can lead to unexpected interactions.

“The more important question is why the robot was still able to come into contact with a person after something went wrong,” Gao said.

He stressed that robots used in public performances should not be treated like simple stage props. Instead, they should be seen as complex machines with real physical risks.

In environments such as dance performances, exhibitions, or interactive displays, human safety must be a priority. Gao said organizers and operators need to carry out detailed risk assessments before such events take place.

He outlined several safety steps to follow. These include testing motion scripts in advance, conducting full rehearsals, maintaining safe distances between robots and humans, and installing emergency stop systems. Human supervisors should also be present at all times, ready to intervene if something goes wrong.

The incident has highlighted the challenges of integrating advanced technology into public spaces. As robots become more common in entertainment, education, and daily life, ensuring their safe operation becomes increasingly important.

While the moment at Xi’an Eurasia University ended without injury, it has sparked a broader conversation about responsibility, design, and preparedness in human-robot interaction. The event serves as a reminder that even well-designed systems can behave unpredictably under certain conditions. As technology continues to evolve, so must the measures to manage its risks.
