Indra Group Demonstrates AI System for Smarter Military Decisions

Indra Group has demonstrated how artificial intelligence can help military teams detect threats and make faster decisions through the FaRADAI project. The European research project focuses on AI that can work with limited resources, remain reliable in difficult conditions and explain how it reaches its conclusions.

FaRADAI, short for “Frugal and Robust AI for Defence Advanced Intelligence,” is funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF). The project brings together 38 partners from 13 European countries and is coordinated by the Hellenic Centre for Research and Technology (CERTH).

The FaRADAI project is developing AI tools for defence operations where decisions often need to be made with incomplete or uncertain information. Indra Group has led several use cases showing how AI could help identify threats and support real-time decisions.

The project recently presented its findings in Thessaloniki, Greece. Representatives from EU defence ministries and the European Commission attended the event.

FaRADAI was established in 2022 and is coordinated by CERTH. Indra Group is one of the key technology partners in the consortium, which includes organisations from across Europe.

The company has focused on AI systems that can support military operators without removing human control. This approach is also part of Indra’s wider work on sovereign European AI capabilities.

Military systems often need to operate in environments where sensors can be affected by misleading or difficult conditions. Understanding what is happening in these situations can be challenging for human operators.

The FaRADAI work aims to help AI systems interpret complex ground images, identify objects such as vehicles and people, and understand how those objects relate to each other. This information can then help operators assess possible threats.

One of Indra Group’s use cases tests AI’s ability to work with ground-based sensor data in difficult conditions. The system analyses images, identifies relevant objects and studies their relationships to build a clearer picture of the situation.

It can also help generate safer routes when unexpected situations occur. This gives operators additional information for making decisions during fast-changing operations.

A key part of the system is Indra’s human-in-the-loop approach. AI provides analysis and recommendations, while people remain responsible for overseeing and making critical decisions.

Indra is already using AI in defence systems, including 360-degree vision technology for military vehicles. Its LSAS sensors and See-Through 360° vision goggles can use AI to analyse images in real time.

The company says its IndraMind platform can help identify people and platforms, distinguish between friendly and unknown forces, and assess potential threats to vehicle crews. These capabilities are designed to give operators a clearer view of their surroundings.

The technology is being developed and tested for complex defence environments. Its performance can depend on the quality of available sensor data and the conditions in which the systems operate.

AI also does not replace human oversight in Indra’s approach. The company is positioning these systems as decision-support tools rather than fully independent decision-makers.

The FaRADAI project shows how AI could become a more useful tool for military operations, especially when information is uncertain or conditions change quickly. Systems that can explain their analysis and continue working with limited resources could improve the way operators respond to threats.

For Europe, the project also supports efforts to develop its own advanced defence and AI technologies. Indra Group says initiatives such as FaRADAI are part of a wider push toward stronger European technological capabilities and greater strategic independence.
