The Georgia Tech Research Institute(GTRI) has opened a new secure facility in Colorado Springs, Colorado, to support work with the US Space Force.
The site gives GTRI engineers and scientists access to a classified workspace near Space Force teams. The setup is intended to shorten the path between military technology requirements and engineering support.
GTRI opened the facility on September 14, 2026, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by engineers, scientists, staff and members of Colorado’s congressional delegation. The Colorado Springs Field Office includes a large secure workspace designed for classified activities. GTRI currently has about 40 personnel working at the field office.
The facility provides an approved environment for handling sensitive defense information and supporting restricted projects. Such spaces are needed when technical work involves classified requirements, system details or operational information. The new workspace expands GTRI’s ability to conduct this work from Colorado Springs.

The location also places GTRI staff closer to the US military’s space community. Colorado Springs is home to several major military and space organizations, making it a significant center for US space operations. GTRI’s local presence gives its researchers a base near those activities.
Engineers Meet Space Teams
The facility is designed to reduce the communication gaps that can arise when technical requirements pass through several organizations. GTRI engineers can work directly with government personnel who understand the problems that new technologies need to address. This gives researchers clearer information when developing or refining technical solutions.
John Bunnell, GTRI’s director of Space Program Development, said the arrangement removes layers of translation between government technology needs and GTRI engineers.
He said personnel responsible for technology requirements will be able to work alongside researchers and engineers at the facility. Bunnell added that GTRI expects this close working relationship to continue for many years.
The arrangement also gives researchers a clearer view of how technologies must perform in operational settings. Military users can communicate requirements and technical issues directly to specialists with relevant engineering expertise. This creates a shorter feedback loop between technical development and user needs.
Colorado Strengthens Space Presence
GTRI’s Colorado Springs presence adds to the institute’s wider network of research and engineering locations across the US. The institute works on technologies relevant to national security, including areas that require advanced engineering and scientific expertise. The new facility gives those activities a dedicated secure base in a major US space hub.
