Türkiye has reached a new milestone in its KAAN fighter jet program. Turkish Aerospace recently showed the KAAN P1 prototype completing taxi tests under its own power. The new prototype also includes several design updates that move the aircraft closer to a fully capable fifth-generation fighter.
The KAAN program aims to give Türkiye greater control over its future air combat capabilities. Developing an indigenous fighter can reduce reliance on foreign aircraft while supporting long-term military modernization. The aircraft is also expected to work alongside existing fighters instead of immediately replacing them.
The P1 prototype features redesigned air intakes, a reshaped nose, updated landing gear, and new areas for infrared, electro-optical, and electronic warfare systems. The aircraft also appears to include built-in locations for radio-frequency antennas that could support radar warning, communications, and electronic warfare while helping maintain its low-observable, or stealth, design.

These improvements could make the aircraft more effective in future combat operations. Better sensor integration allows pilots to gather and process more information during missions. A cleaner airframe design may also improve survivability while supporting networked air combat with other military platforms.
The project is still under development. Turkish Aerospace has not confirmed the purpose of every visible design change, and many systems have not yet been fully tested. The current prototype is meant for development, so the final production aircraft could look different.
The KAAN P1 taxi tests show that Türkiye is making steady progress toward building its own fifth-generation fighter. While more testing is still needed before the aircraft enters service, the latest prototype highlights the country’s growing aerospace capabilities and its long-term plans for advanced air defense.
