The Idaho National Laboratory (INL) will play a central role in a new regional initiative designed to strengthen the future of advanced nuclear energy in the US.
The project is part of the Intermountain-West Nuclear Energy Corridor (INEC) Tech Hub, which has received a five-year federal grant worth $31 million from the US Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration. Combined with $9 million in matching investments, the initiative will bring more than $40 million into the Idaho and Wyoming region.
The Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium (IAEC) announced the funding award on July 20. The consortium will manage the grant and coordinate the work of more than 45 regional partners involved in the program. Together, these organizations will focus on expanding advanced nuclear technology, strengthening manufacturing, and supporting long-term economic growth.
Regional Partnership Expands
The INEC Tech Hub forms part of a broader national effort to improve America’s energy security. It also supports the country’s goal of increasing electricity production as demand continues to rise from industries, businesses, and communities. Advanced nuclear energy is expected to play an important role because it can generate large amounts of electricity with low carbon emissions.

INL is one of the founding members of the Idaho Advanced Energy Consortium. Through the new Tech Hub, the laboratory will help move advanced nuclear technologies from research facilities into commercial use. It will also support workforce development and strengthen important parts of the domestic nuclear supply chain.
INL Director John Wagner said the investment reflects the growing importance of advanced nuclear energy for the country’s future.
He said the Tech Hub combines research expertise, infrastructure, and industry partnerships needed to move technologies from development to large-scale deployment. Wagner added that the collaboration creates a stronger pathway for turning research into real-world energy projects.
One of INL’s primary responsibilities will be helping remove barriers that slow nuclear energy projects. The laboratory will work with private companies to simplify development processes and support the commercial deployment of advanced reactor technologies. These efforts are expected to reduce the time required to move new designs from testing to operation.
Nuclear Energy Fuels Regional Growth
Advanced nuclear reactors differ from many traditional reactors because they are designed to improve safety, efficiency, and operational flexibility. Many newer designs are also smaller, making them easier to manufacture and install in different locations. These features have increased interest in advanced nuclear systems as countries look for reliable sources of clean electricity.
The Tech Hub will also focus on strengthening domestic fuel production. Building a stronger US-based nuclear fuel supply reduces dependence on imported materials and improves long-term energy security. A more reliable supply chain also supports future reactor construction and ongoing plant operations.
Workforce development is another major goal of the initiative. INL will help expand education and training programs for engineers, technicians, manufacturers, and skilled trade workers needed by the growing nuclear industry. These programs aim to prepare workers with practical skills required for future energy projects.
The economic impact is expected to extend well beyond Idaho and Wyoming. The Tech Hub is projected to create hundreds of high-paying energy jobs across the Intermountain West during the next five years. It is also expected to support thousands of additional jobs throughout the national nuclear industry as related projects expand.

The participation of more than 45 regional partners shows the scale of collaboration behind the project. Government agencies, research organizations, educational institutions, and private companies will each contribute expertise to accelerate nuclear energy development. Such partnerships help reduce duplication of effort while sharing knowledge and technical resources.
As work begins under the five-year program, the INEC Tech Hub is expected to strengthen America’s position in advanced nuclear technology. The combination of research, manufacturing, workforce training, and industry collaboration creates a foundation for long-term growth in the nuclear sector.
