President Donald Trump has taken his first flight aboard the US Air Force’s new VC-25B Bridge aircraft, marking the official operational debut of the modified Boeing 747-8i.

The aircraft, originally gifted by Qatar and later converted for US government use, carried Trump to North Dakota for the opening of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and events celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

The flight represents a major milestone for the Air Force as it introduces the aircraft into the Air Force One fleet while questions about its long-term role continue.

The White House confirmed that this was Trump’s first journey on the newly modified aircraft. The plane now joins the Air Force One fleet as an additional presidential transport. Its first official mission marks an important step in expanding the aircraft available for presidential travel.

Trump Praises New Aircraft

Before boarding, Trump praised the Boeing 747-8i, which serves as the foundation for the new aircraft. He said Boeing described it as the best commercial airplane ever built. Trump also expressed excitement about taking its first flight.

The aircraft has attracted significant public attention since its arrival. It was originally owned by Qatar before being transferred to the US. That unusual arrangement sparked political debate and questions about whether another presidential aircraft was needed before the next generation of Air Force One jets arrives.

The VC-25B Bridge aircraft also features a completely different exterior design. Trump supported replacing the light blue Air Force One color scheme introduced during the Kennedy administration. The new paint scheme marks the first major visual change to presidential aircraft in about six decades.

One of the Air Force’s current VC-25A Air Force One aircraft accompanied the trip as a backup. The Air Force regularly uses backup aircraft during presidential travel for safety and operational readiness. The older VC-25A fleet continues to perform official missions while newer aircraft enter service.

Why VC-25B Bridge Draws Attention

The modified Boeing 747-8i has remained at the center of debate for several months. Critics questioned whether the aircraft received enough upgrades to perform every Air Force One mission. Others focused on the unusual gift from Qatar that made the aircraft available.

Reports earlier suggested Trump might first fly on the aircraft during a visit to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. Other reports also mentioned a possible Independence Day flyover using the aircraft. Instead, the North Dakota trip became its first presidential mission.

The aircraft first appeared publicly on June 19, after months of modifications. It is also scheduled to participate in Washington, D.C., celebrations for the July 4 holiday. These appearances introduce the aircraft to the public before it becomes a regular part of presidential operations.

Unlike standard commercial airliners, Air Force One aircraft require extensive upgrades. These include secure communications, protection against electronic threats, and equipment that allows the president to work during emergencies. Such systems transform a passenger jet into a flying command center.

The VC-25B Bridge aircraft completed its conversion in only about ten months. That fast timeline led some aviation experts to question whether every required system could be installed and fully tested. Government officials have repeatedly stated that the aircraft meets safety and security requirements for its current role.

L3Harris handled the aircraft’s conversion for the US government. Company officials said security work began before any major modifications. Teams carefully inspected the aircraft to remove electronic risks and ensure every onboard system met strict government standards.

Jason Lambert, President of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance at L3Harris, said experts from the US government and the company worked together throughout the process.

He explained that specialists performed detailed electronic inspections across the entire aircraft. According to Lambert, the work ensured the aircraft was safe and secure before additional upgrades continued.

Lambert declined to discuss several classified systems installed on the aircraft. He referred questions about electromagnetic pulse protection, survivability, and advanced communications to the US Air Force. Those capabilities remain closely guarded because they support national security and presidential operations.

Future of Air Force One fleet

The new Bridge aircraft is not replacing the current Air Force One fleet immediately. The Air Force continues operating two VC-25A aircraft based on older Boeing 747-200 airframes. Those aircraft remain fully available for presidential travel despite their increasing age.

The Air Force still expects Boeing to deliver two fully equipped VC-25B Air Force One aircraft later in the decade. Those aircraft are being built specifically to replace the aging VC-25A fleet. However, the long-running program has experienced repeated delays and rising costs.

To support future operations, the Air Force has also acquired another Boeing 747-8i from Lufthansa. That aircraft serves as a training platform for flight crews and maintenance teams. A second former Lufthansa aircraft will provide spare parts to support the expanding fleet.

The Bridge aircraft fills an important gap while the permanent VC-25B program continues. It gives the Air Force additional flexibility for presidential transportation during a period of transition. That extra capacity becomes increasingly valuable as the older aircraft require more maintenance.

The aircraft’s entry into active service also demonstrates how commercial aircraft can be adapted for specialized government missions. While it does not replace the future VC-25B fleet, it strengthens current presidential transport capabilities. It also provides valuable operational experience with the newer Boeing 747-8 platform.

Trump’s first flight aboard the VC-25B Bridge aircraft officially places it in the Air Force One rotation. Future presidential trips will show how frequently the aircraft is used alongside the existing fleet. Its performance over the coming months will also shape its role until the next generation of Air Force One aircraft enters full service.
