The US Army has officially established the Space Operations Branch as its newest military branch.

The move marks a major step in the Army’s ongoing modernization efforts. It also strengthens the Army’s ability to operate across land, air, sea, cyber, and space during future conflicts.

The new branch brings together the Army’s space professionals under one dedicated career structure.

It combines Space Operations Officers, known as Functional Area 40, with enlisted Tactical Space Operations Specialists serving under Military Occupational Specialty 40D. This creates a permanent home for Soldiers who support military space missions.

Modern Multidomain Operations

Modern military operations rely heavily on satellites and space-based systems. These systems provide communication, navigation, intelligence, missile warning, and precise targeting information. The Army depends on these capabilities to coordinate forces and support missions worldwide.

The Space Operations Branch will train Soldiers to operate, protect, and support these critical space capabilities. It will also help defend US space assets against growing threats. At the same time, it will work to disrupt an enemy’s ability to use space during military operations.

Space Operations Boost Readiness

Army leaders say space has become an essential part of every battlefield. Soldiers on the ground now depend on satellite data just as much as traditional equipment. Building a dedicated branch ensures the Army has experts ready to support those missions.

US Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Christopher LaNeve said land forces need expertise across every operational domain.

He said the new 40D military specialty creates skilled Soldiers who provide capabilities that the Joint Force depends on. He added that the Army is developing professionals at every level instead of simply creating another capability.

The Space Operations Branch will provide trained Soldiers and deployable units for specialized space missions. These personnel will support Army and joint force operations wherever needed. They will also help deny, disrupt, and degrade enemy activities in the space domain.

Space Professionals Strengthen Army Readiness

The Army already operates hundreds of thousands of systems that rely on space-based technology. These systems improve battlefield awareness and help commanders make faster decisions. As military operations become more connected, the need for skilled space personnel continues to grow.

The new branch also reduces pressure on several existing Army branches. Previously, Air Defense Artillery, Signal, and Military Intelligence Soldiers often filled space-related assignments through temporary tours. Those branches can now focus more directly on their primary missions while the Space Operations Branch handles dedicated space responsibilities.

Lt. Gen. John Rafferty, commander of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, said the Army is the largest user of space capabilities across the Joint Force.

He said space integration remains essential for multidomain operations at every level. He added that the new branch helps deliver space-based support directly to Soldiers operating at the tactical edge.

The Army expects this new structure to improve readiness across the force. It also supports the growing requirements of multidomain task forces and theater strike effects groups. These formations increasingly depend on space support during complex operations.

Existing Training System Remains in Place

The Army will continue using its current training system for space professionals. Officers and enlisted Soldiers will attend the Space and Missile Defense School at the Army Space and Missile Defense Command’s Center of Excellence in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This allows the Army to expand the new branch without creating an entirely new training pipeline.

Eligible enlisted Soldiers from grades E-3 through E-9 can apply to transfer into Military Occupational Specialty 40D. The official transfer window opens in October 2026 through a central selection board process. Officers will continue requesting acceptance into Functional Area 40 after serving in their basic branch.

Creating the Space Operations Branch reflects the Army’s long-term focus on preparing for future conflicts. Space has become a critical part of modern warfare, just like land, sea, air, and cyber operations.
