Engineered for extraordinary endurance, the technology is capable of supporting operational lifetimes extending beyond a century, redefining expectations for long-term energy reliability.

At its core, the NBV series harnesses the energy generated from beta decay and converts it into usable electrical power through a fully sealed, solid-state architecture. Unlike conventional chemical batteries that degrade over time and require periodic replacement or servicing, this system is designed for permanence and stability. Its unique configuration makes it especially valuable for remote, inaccessible, or hazardous environments where maintenance is difficult, costly, or entirely impractical.

The company emphasized that this innovation is aimed at mission-critical applications where uninterrupted power is essential. “Simply stated, critical mission sets collapse if a component, such as a battery, within the power matrix is compromised or fails. He further noted that the NBV series represents a breakthrough in ultra-long-duration power systems, particularly for sectors where operational continuity is non-negotiable. By eliminating dependence on conventional battery replacement cycles, the technology significantly reduces lifecycle risks and enhances system resilience in challenging conditions.

The launch also marks a major strategic milestone for NRD as it transitions decades of expertise in regulated nuclear materials into advanced energy solutions. According to Kevin Heffler, Chief Operations Officer, the development reflects both scientific depth and operational readiness. He highlighted that NRD operates as a licensed nuclear materials manufacturer with extensive safety and research infrastructure, including six in-house radiological laboratories, a dedicated Health Physics Department, and a comprehensive radiation safety program. These capabilities are designed to ensure both scalable production and long-term reliability for global customer deployments.

From a technical standpoint, the NBV series offers highly specialized performance characteristics tailored for micro-power applications. The system delivers a power output ranging from 5 nanowatts (nW) to 500 nW, an open-circuit voltage between 1.0 V and 20.0 V, and a nominal current range of 7.5 nA to 33 nA. All of these functions are integrated within a compact 20 mm × 20 mm × 12 mm solid-state form factor. The design is highly adaptable, allowing customization of performance and packaging based on specific system integration requirements.

This combination of longevity, stability, and compact engineering opens the door to a wide range of advanced applications. The NBV series is intended for use in commercial and industrial condition monitoring systems, precision metrology, and long-term data logging operations.
