North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Unveils Nuclear-Capable Rocket System at Party Congress

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspects rows of nuclear-capable 600mm rocket launchers displayed ahead of the ruling Workers' Party congress in Pyongyang.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has unveiled a large array of nuclear-capable rocket launchers ahead of a key ruling party congress. State media reported the weapon system is designed for strategic missions, a term the country uses for nuclear operations.

Kim Jong Un showcased the 600mm multiple-launch rocket system at a ceremony in Pyongyang ahead of the Workers’ Party congress, which happens once every five years. State news agency KCNA quoted Kim calling the weapon “wonderful and attractive” and warned that enemies facing it “would be able to expect God’s protection.”

Dozens of launch vehicles appeared in neat rows on the plaza of Pyongyang’s House of Culture, where the congress will take place. Kim said the weapon system was presented as a gift from munitions workers and is meant to deter unnamed enemies. He added that it can “reduce the aimed target to ashes through surprise and simultaneous attack.”

North Korea’s munitions industry produced the rocket system under Kim’s orders to expand and modernize missile production in recent months. The country has significantly stepped up missile testing during this period, with analysts pointing to improved precision-strike capabilities as a key goal.

From North Korea’s perspective, the system provides a strategic deterrent against potential attacks. Analyst Hong Min of the Korea Institute for National Unification explained the rockets have an estimated range of 400 kilometers, which covers all of South Korea. “Its primary purpose is to neutralise the combined air power of South Korea and the United States,” he said.

The multiple-launch rocket system can fire large rockets that carry significant destructive power. If equipped with tactical nuclear warheads, Hong Min noted that “a single battery firing four to five rounds could devastate an entire airbase.” South Korea’s capital Seoul sits less than 50 kilometers from the border.

North Korea would likely use its vast artillery arsenal for saturation strikes on the South in case of conflict. The new system adds long-range precision capability to this existing threat. Analysts also suggest North Korea may be testing weapons before potentially exporting them to Russia.

The system’s actual performance remains untested in combat. While state media showcases its capabilities, outside experts must rely on satellite imagery and limited technical data to assess its true range and accuracy. The political messaging behind the unveiling matters as much as the military hardware itself.

The congress is expected to outline North Korea’s foreign policy, war planning, and nuclear ambitions for the next five years. Kim said in January the gathering would detail “next-stage plans” for developing nuclear forces. This display signals that expanding nuclear-capable conventional weapons remains a top priority.
