US Air Force confirms a two-pilot crew for the B-21 Raider and launches a pilot transition program to strengthen future strike missions.

The US Department of the Air Force has officially confirmed that the B-21 Raider will operate with a two-pilot crew.

The announcement also introduces a new pilot transition program for selected weapons system officers (WSOs) and combat systems officers (CSOs). The move is designed to prepare the Air Force for future long-range strike missions in increasingly challenging operational environments.

Crew Structure Confirmed

Air Force leaders said they reached the decision after carefully studying the B-21 Raider’s advanced systems and mission requirements. They concluded that a two-pilot configuration provides the best balance of operational effectiveness and mission support. The new crew structure reflects how the aircraft is expected to perform during long-distance missions.

The B-21 Raider is the Air Force’s newest long-range stealth bomber. It is designed to penetrate heavily defended airspace while carrying out strategic strike missions. Its advanced automation reduces workload, allowing two pilots to manage the aircraft effectively.

B-21 Raider New Pilot Pathway

Alongside the crew announcement, the Air Force is creating a pilot transition program for selected WSOs and CSOs. Officers chosen for the program will attend pilot training before receiving assignments to the B-21 Raider. Eligible personnel will receive additional details through their command channels as the program moves forward.

WSOs and CSOs currently perform critical mission roles, including managing sensors, navigation, weapons, and mission systems on various Air Force aircraft. By training experienced officers to become B-21 pilots, the Air Force aims to preserve valuable operational knowledge. This approach also helps build a skilled workforce for the aircraft’s future missions.
