China has set a new world record in as maglev train technology by accelerating a superconducting maglev test vehicle from 0 to 700 km/h in just two seconds.
The test was conducted by researchers from the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT) on a 400-metre magnetic levitation test track, and the vehicle was safely brought back to a stop after reaching the peak speed, underscoring both performance and control.
The experimental maglev vehicle weighed around 1 tonne, and its remarkable acceleration was achieved thanks to advanced superconducting magnets, ultra-high-speed electromagnetic propulsion, and electric suspension guidance systems — eliminating wheel-rail friction and enabling extreme speeds.
This demonstration marks the fastest acceleration and highest speed ever recorded for a superconducting electric maglev system, surpassing previous records and signaling a major technological advance in ultra-high-speed ground transport research.
The breakthrough is part of China’s long-term investment in maglev and next-generation transportation technologies.

According to reports, the research team has been dedicated to maglev development for over a decade, overcoming core technical challenges including transient high-power energy storage and high-field superconducting magnets. Experts see such progress as foundational for future ultra-fast travel concepts, potentially including vacuum-tube transport and other advanced mobility solutions.
This milestone not only showcases China’s leadership in magnetic levitation technology but also expands the possibilities for the next generation of high-speed ground transportation.
