China has discovered and named a new mineral called Wusihe germanium ore, according to Science and Technology Daily. The mineral has an average germanium oxide content of up to 72%, making it one of the richest known germanium-bearing minerals.
The mineral was jointly discovered and submitted for approval by several Chinese research teams. The International Mineralogical Association has officially approved its name, making it the first independently occurring germanate mineral discovered in China.
The discovery matters because germanium is a scarce material used in many high-tech products. It is important for semiconductors, fiber-optic systems, infrared equipment, solar cells and aerospace instruments.

Most germanium is not mined from standalone germanium deposits. Instead, it is usually recovered as a byproduct of lead-zinc mining or from coal deposits, which makes the supply closely tied to other mining industries.
The new mineral was found in a mining area that already contains two other germanium-rich minerals, according to the report. Researchers say its independent occurrence could help scientists better understand how germanium becomes concentrated in rocks.
The discovery could also help future mineral exploration. By studying the geological conditions around Wusihe germanium ore, researchers may be able to identify similar deposits in the wider Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou region, a major germanium-rich area in China.
There is still a difference between finding a mineral and developing a commercial mine. The discovery does not by itself show how much recoverable germanium the deposit contains or whether it can be mined economically at large scale.
The find comes as demand for germanium is attracting more attention. The Global Times quoted critical-minerals analyst Wu Chenhui as saying germanium is becoming more important for advanced technologies, including some AI-related systems, while countries are also trying to secure supplies of critical materials.

The discovery could therefore be important for both science and resource planning. If further exploration finds more economically useful deposits, the geological knowledge gained from Wusihe germanium ore could help China expand its domestic germanium resources and strengthen supply for high-tech industries.
