GE Aerospace and Magellan Aerospace have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities in Canada for the F414-GE-39E fighter engine.
The agreement depends on the Canadian government’s decision to acquire the Saab JAS 39 Gripen E as part of the Royal Canadian Air Force’s future fighter fleet. If the aircraft is selected, the partnership will create a domestic support system for one of the fighter’s most important components.
The proposed arrangement focuses on keeping F414 engines operational throughout their service life. Instead of relying on overseas facilities, Canada would be able to inspect, repair, and maintain the engines within the country. This approach is designed to improve aircraft availability while reducing the time required for major engine servicing.
GE Aerospace said the agreement builds on a partnership with Magellan Aerospace that has continued for more than 60 years across military and commercial aviation programmes. The companies have worked together on engine-related projects over several decades. The new MOU expands that relationship into future fighter engine support.
F414 Engine Powers Gripen
Under the agreement, GE Aerospace would train Magellan Aerospace and provide the licences needed to perform complete engine sustainment work.
Magellan would become Canada’s domestic centre of excellence for maintaining the F414 engine if the Gripen E enters Royal Canadian Air Force service. The work would include maintenance, repairs, inspections, and overhaul activities throughout the engine’s operational life.
The planned MRO work would take place at Magellan Aerospace’s facility in Mississauga, Ontario. Developing these capabilities locally would allow skilled technicians to service engines without sending them abroad. It would also help retain specialised aerospace knowledge and technical expertise inside Canada.

Paul Ferraro, Vice President of Defense Engines and Services at GE Aerospace, said the agreement would ensure the Royal Canadian Air Force has access to in-country engine sustainment services that support readiness of the F414 engine fleet.
He said the partnership continues the long-standing relationship between GE Aerospace and Magellan Aerospace. Ferraro added that local maintenance capability would support reliable engine operations over the long term.
Strengthening Defence Industry
Magellan Aerospace said the agreement reflects a shared goal of expanding Canada’s aerospace capabilities through domestic industrial partnerships. The company stated that it is prepared to provide engine maintenance services if the Canadian government selects the Saab Gripen E. It also highlighted the importance of maintaining highly skilled technical jobs and strengthening Canada’s defence manufacturing base.
Haydn Martin, Vice President of Business Development, Marketing, and Contracts at Magellan Aerospace, said the company is ready to deliver world-class engine support if the Gripen E is chosen.
He said local MRO services would improve aircraft readiness while helping Canada build long-term technical expertise. Martin added that the project aligns with Canada’s wider goal of strengthening its domestic defence industry.
The initiative also supports Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, which promotes developing national capabilities through partnerships and domestic production. Establishing local engine support would provide greater control over maintenance and improve long-term operational resilience. It would also reduce dependence on international repair facilities for a critical defence asset.
Proven Engine Performance
The F414 engine powers the Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighter and is already used by several defence forces around the world. According to GE Aerospace, more than 1,600 F414 engines have been delivered to eight countries. Together, these engines have accumulated more than five million flight hours.

The engine is designed with six interchangeable modules that simplify maintenance and help reduce lifecycle costs. It also operates using an on-condition maintenance approach, meaning servicing is based on the engine’s actual condition instead of fixed overhaul schedules. This allows operators to keep aircraft available for longer while limiting unnecessary maintenance work.
The F414 is known for providing rapid throttle response and consistent performance during demanding missions. These features make it suitable for modern multirole fighter aircraft that require high reliability under different operating conditions.
However, the planned partnership between GE Aerospace and Magellan Aerospace would establish a domestic engine support network that strengthens long-term fleet readiness while expanding the country’s aerospace capabilities.
