L3Harris Technologies has received a contract from General Dynamics Electric Boat to supply battery monitoring systems for the US Navy’s Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programmes.
The systems will support two of the Navy’s most important submarine fleets. They are designed to provide continuous information about battery performance during operations.
Real-Time Monitoring
The monitoring systems assess battery health in real time and alert crews to any changes that require attention. This allows submarine commanders to make informed decisions while improving operational efficiency and safety. Continuous monitoring also helps reduce the risk of unexpected battery-related issues during missions.
L3Harris President of Maritime, Space & Mission Systems Nino DiCosmo said the systems play an important role in supporting operational capability and protecting crew safety.

He added that the contract reflects the company’s commitment to delivering dependable technology for the Navy’s highest-priority submarine platforms. These submarines form a key part of the US’s strategic defence capability.
L3Harris Powers the Fleet
L3Harris has worked with the US Navy’s submarine force across several generations of vessels. Its technologies have supported Ohio-class and Los Angeles-class submarines before expanding to the Virginia-class fleet. The latest contract also strengthens the company’s role in the Columbia-class programme, the Navy’s next-generation ballistic missile submarine.
Virginia-class submarines are designed for fast-attack missions, while Columbia-class submarines will replace the aging Ohio-class fleet responsible for nuclear deterrence. Reliable battery monitoring helps ensure these vessels remain ready for extended deployments and demanding missions.
As production of the Columbia-class programme continues, the new contract reinforces the growing importance of advanced onboard monitoring systems in supporting future naval operations.
