The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Lockheed Martin UK a contract worth £20 million ($27 million) to develop a hypersonic target for future missile defense testing.
The project is part of Project Bowline, a program designed to strengthen the country’s ability to evaluate advanced air and missile defense systems. The investment also supports the UK’s wider strategy to improve protection against rapidly evolving hypersonic weapons.
The new target will simulate the speed and behavior of hypersonic threats during testing exercises. It will allow defense organizations to assess how well sensors, tracking systems, and missile interceptors perform against extremely fast-moving targets. The Ministry of Defence said the target will be capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound.
UK Minister Luke Pollard, responsible for Defence Readiness and Industry, announced the news during the Farnborough International Airshow.
He said the project restores Britain’s sovereign hypersonic target capability after a gap of more than ten years. The new program also strengthens the country’s long-term investment in advanced defense technology.
Hypersonic Threats Demand New Testing
Project Bowline forms part of the AUKUS Pillar 2 partnership involving the UK, the US, and Australia. Pillar 2 focuses on developing advanced military technologies, including hypersonic systems, artificial intelligence, electronic warfare, and undersea capabilities. The hypersonic target project reflects the growing cooperation among the three countries in addressing emerging security challenges.

Hypersonic weapons travel at speeds of Mach 5 or higher while remaining difficult to detect and intercept. Unlike traditional ballistic missiles, many hypersonic systems can change direction during flight, making their paths less predictable. This creates significant challenges for existing air defense networks.
Testing against realistic targets helps engineers improve radar systems, tracking technologies, and missile interceptors before deployment. A target vehicle acts like a practice opponent, allowing defense systems to prove their effectiveness under demanding conditions. Such testing provides valuable data without exposing forces to actual combat situations.
Supporting National Industry
The Ministry of Defence said the contract will support around 63 jobs in Bedfordshire. It will also benefit approximately 15 small and medium-sized enterprises across the UK through the project’s supply chain. These companies are expected to contribute components, engineering expertise, and specialist services during development.
The announcement coincides with the launch of the UK’s new Defence SME Action Plan. The initiative aims to make it easier for smaller businesses to work with the defense sector by simplifying procurement processes and opening supply chain opportunities. The government views small companies as an important source of innovation and technical expertise.
Luke Pollard said British businesses remain central to the country’s defense industry.
He added that the government plans to spend £7.5 billion ($10 billion) with UK small and medium-sized businesses by 2028. He also noted that £400 million ($535 million) will be reserved every year for UK Defence Innovation to encourage new technologies.
Future Defence Strategy
The UK has not yet announced plans to field a dedicated hypersonic interceptor missile. Instead, the government’s 2025 Strategic Defence Review places greater emphasis on building a stronger Integrated Air and Missile Defence architecture. This broader approach combines sensors, command systems, and interceptor missiles into a coordinated defensive network.
Alongside Project Bowline, the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory continues research into advanced sensing and tracking technologies. These efforts focus on detecting, following, and responding to fast-moving threats more effectively. Better tracking capabilities are considered essential for defending against modern hypersonic weapons.

UK National Armaments Director Rupert Pearce said Project Bowline will help the country stay ahead of rapidly evolving hypersonic threats.
He said working alongside AUKUS partners while investing in advanced missile technology strengthens the UK’s defence capabilities, supports domestic industry, and improves its ability to deliver effective missile defense.

It combines international cooperation, domestic manufacturing, and advanced research under a single initiative. However, the hypersonic target is expected to play a key role in preparing the UK‘s next generation of air and missile defense systems.
