Amentum has been selected by the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to begin negotiations for a phased lease at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina.
The project aims to develop one of the largest combined artificial intelligence and energy infrastructure facilities in the US. It will feature a 1-gigawatt AI data center supported by around 2 gigawatts of on-site power generation.
Project Scale Overview
The project will initially rely on natural gas to supply electricity for the facility. Over time, the energy system is expected to transition to advanced nuclear power as it becomes available. This phased approach is intended to provide reliable power while supporting long-term clean energy goals.
Artificial intelligence requires large amounts of computing power, which also increases electricity demand. Data centers process and store huge volumes of information, making a stable energy supply essential for continuous operation. Combining computing facilities with dedicated power generation helps improve reliability and reduce dependence on external electricity grids.
Amentum Powers AI Expansion
Amentum Chief Executive Officer John Heller said the project connects artificial intelligence, energy resilience, and national security.

He stated that the company’s engineering expertise and long-standing partnership with the US government position it to deliver infrastructure that supports future technologies. Heller added that the agreement offers an opportunity to help build systems that strengthen the nation’s strategic capabilities.
Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy & Environment business, said the company has decades of experience solving complex engineering and nuclear challenges, including work at the Savannah River Site.
He said the new project builds on that history by combining expertise in nuclear operations, infrastructure development, and program delivery. Whitney added that Amentum will work with the NNSA to safely and securely accelerate the next generation of AI and energy infrastructure.
