Renault Group and Thales have unveiled a new tactical vehicle, 4 TROOP, at Eurosatory 2026.

The prototype was developed to address the changing operational needs of modern land forces. It combines mobility, digital connectivity, and mission-support technologies into a single platform.

The vehicle is based on the VCMR concept and brings together expertise from both companies. Renault contributed its vehicle engineering and industrial production capabilities. Thales supplied advanced communication, connectivity, and digital battlefield technologies.

The 4 TROOP prototype is designed as a multi-mission vehicle for military operations. It supports command and control activities while helping troops operate more effectively in complex environments. The platform also aims to reduce deployment times and improve operational flexibility.

Inside The 4 TROOP

One of the key features of the vehicle is its integrated digital architecture. The system combines secure communications, tactical networking, advanced sensors, and operational management tools. These technologies allow military personnel to exchange information quickly and securely during missions.

The vehicle serves as a mobile command center that can be adapted to various operational requirements. Commanders can coordinate activities, monitor battlefield conditions, and manage multiple assets from inside the vehicle. This flexibility makes it suitable for a wide range of missions.

A major capability of the platform is its ability to operate alongside unmanned systems. The vehicle can coordinate both Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs). These systems can support reconnaissance, surveillance, and other battlefield tasks without exposing personnel to additional risk.

Thales has integrated its Combat Digital Platform into the vehicle. This platform helps transform large amounts of operational data into useful information for decision-making. It provides commanders with a clearer understanding of the situation and supports faster responses during missions.

Hybrid Powertrain Designed for Modern Military Needs

The 4 TROOP prototype uses a hybrid drivetrain. This setup allows quieter operation when needed while also providing extended range for longer missions. Such capabilities are increasingly important in military environments where reducing detection can improve operational effectiveness.

The vehicle is built on a 4×4 configuration and is designed to operate across different types of terrain. It can support reconnaissance missions, troop coordination, escort duties, logistics support, and surveillance operations. Another important feature is its Vehicle-to-Load(V2L) capability. This system enables the vehicle to supply electrical power to field equipment. Soldiers can use the vehicle as a mobile energy source for communications systems, sensors, and other electronic devices.

The V2L function improves energy autonomy during operations. This reduces dependence on separate power equipment and simplifies logistics. In military missions, reducing the amount of equipment that needs transportation can improve efficiency and mobility.

Faster Production and Lower Lifecycle Costs

The project reflects a growing trend in the defense sector. Manufacturers are increasingly adapting proven civilian vehicle platforms for military applications. This approach can shorten development timelines and lower production costs while maintaining operational performance.

Renault said the concept relies on existing vehicle platforms from its broader product portfolio. By using established industrial manufacturing capabilities, the company aims to deliver vehicles more quickly than traditional defense development programs. This strategy also supports scalability if military demand increases.

Support and maintenance are another important part of the project. Renault plans to use its extensive service network and industrial expertise to provide long-term vehicle support. This approach aims to reduce maintenance challenges and lower lifecycle costs for military operators.

The unveiling of 4 TROOP comes at a time when armed forces around the world are seeking more connected and flexible battlefield platforms. Modern military operations increasingly rely on real-time information, autonomous systems, and secure communications. Vehicles that combine these capabilities are becoming a central part of future defense planning.
