Shanghai-built industrial robot lifts over 5,000kg, setting a Guinness World Record and advancing China’s automation push.

China has set a new global benchmark in industrial robotics with a record-breaking heavy-duty machine developed in Shanghai.

The robot lifted more than 5,000 kilograms during an official Guinness World Records certification event held in Jinshan district. The achievement set a new world record for the heaviest industrial robot by load capacity.

The robot was developed by Shanghai Chaifu Robot Co and is known as the CR5000-3700. The machine was presented inside a smart factory in Zhangyan town on Friday morning. Guinness adjudicator Hu Xiaowen confirmed the record during the event.

The new robot more than doubled the previous world record set in 2016 by Fanuc Corporation. Fanuc’s industrial robot had a maximum load capacity of 2,300 kilograms. The new Chinese machine pushed the global limit past 5,000 kilograms for the first time.

Heavy-Duty Robot Targets Key Industries

The CR5000-3700 was designed for extremely demanding industrial work. It is built to handle heavy loads while maintaining high precision in challenging, high-risk environments. The company said the robot supports industries such as aerospace, tunnel construction, metallurgy, chemicals, and nuclear energy.

Industrial robots like the CR5000-3700 are used to move or position very large equipment and materials. These machines reduce human risk in dangerous workplaces and improve production efficiency. They also help factories automate tasks that require high strength and accuracy.

The company stated that the robot is already being used in real industrial settings across China. Current applications include rail transit systems, new energy vehicle production, tunnel engineering, and heavy manufacturing plants. This shows the machine has moved beyond testing and into commercial operation.

Experts say the record reflects China’s wider push to strengthen advanced manufacturing. Cao Heping said the development supports China’s efforts to improve self-reliance in core technologies. He also noted that China is increasing the use of artificial intelligence and automation across manufacturing industries.

Cao explained that the country is shifting from being a large manufacturing center to becoming a high-tech manufacturing leader. He said advanced robotics can improve productivity and support high-quality industrial growth. Heavy-duty robots are becoming especially important in sectors where labor costs and safety concerns continue to rise.

China Expands Smart Manufacturing and Robotics

China has increased investment in automation, robotics, and AI-driven manufacturing over the past several years. The country is modernizing factories in industries such as automotive production, logistics, and heavy industry. Industrial robots are now playing a central role in this transformation.

The latest Guinness World Record follows several other robotics milestones in China this year. One widely discussed event was the 2026 Beijing E-Town humanoid robot half-marathon held in April.

During that event, a Chinese humanoid robot reportedly completed the race in just over 50 minutes, drawing global attention to China’s robotics sector.

Analysts say these developments are connected to China’s long-term industrial strategy. Xiang Ligang said China’s robotics growth is supported by strong infrastructure, policy backing, and a large industrial ecosystem. He added that talent development and manufacturing efficiency also contribute to faster innovation.

China has also expanded national and regional robotics innovation centers in recent years. Shanghai now operates large robot training facilities where more than 100 robots can perform tasks in industrial and service environments. These centers generate large amounts of operational data that help improve robot performance and machine learning systems.

Open-source software frameworks and shared robotics datasets are also helping companies enter the market quickly. This lowers development costs and speeds up commercialization. Smaller firms can now build robotics products without developing every technology from the beginning.

China Leads Global Industrial Robot Market

According to the International Federation of Robotics, China remains the world’s largest industrial robot market. The group’s 2025 report showed that global industrial robot installations reached 542,000 units in 2024. That figure is more than double the level recorded a decade earlier.

China alone accounted for 295,000 new industrial robot installations in 2024. That represented a 7 percent increase compared to the previous year. The country’s total industrial robot stock also surpassed 2 million units, representing more than half of the global total.

The growing use of robots is changing how factories operate worldwide. Countries are investing heavily in automation to improve efficiency, lower costs, and address labor shortages. China’s latest record-setting robot shows how competition in industrial automation is moving toward larger, smarter, and more capable machines.

The CR5000-3700 record is expected to strengthen China’s position in the global robotics industry. It also signals rising demand for advanced heavy-duty automation systems in energy, transportation, and manufacturing sectors.
