Danish wind giant Vestas has secured its inaugural offshore wind order in South Korea, a major 390 MW deal that will see 26 of its powerful V236-15.0 MW turbines installed off the coast of Jeollanam Province. This landmark project, developed by the Shinan-Ui Offshore Wind consortium including Hanwha Ocean and SK Eternix, marks a significant step in Korea’s clean energy transition and a strategic beachhead for Vestas in a key Asian market.
The order, announced by Vestas, is for the Shinan-Ui offshore wind project and includes a comprehensive 20-year service agreement to ensure long-term, optimized performance. Turbine delivery is slated to begin in 2027, with the wind farm expected to reach commercial operation in 2028. This project is notable not just for its scale but for its ambition to integrate full global standards, according to the developers. “The Shinan-Ui Project represents Korea’s first utility-scale offshore wind development to fully incorporate global standards,” stated Jong Hyun Son, Head of Eco Energy & Industrial EPC Division at Hanwha Ocean.
For Vestas, this deal represents a critical entry into a promising new offshore frontier. “We are proud to partner with Hanwha Ocean on this milestone project in South Korea and introduce our industry-leading V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines to South Korean waters,” said Purvin Patel, President of Vestas Asia Pacific. He highlighted that the flagship turbine model, which received its type certification in 2023, is already being deployed in Europe and is now poised for large-scale global deployment. With over 9 GW of firm orders secured worldwide for the V236-15.0 MW, the Shinan-Ui project adds substantial momentum, reported Vestas.

The consortium behind the project underscores the collaborative, industrial effort required for such large-scale offshore developments. Led by Hanwha Ocean, the group also includes KOMIPO (Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd.), Future Energy Fund, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction. This partnership aims to leverage a strong local supply chain for foundations, cables, and installation vessels while integrating Vestas’s international technology. The project is seen as a catalyst for building up South Korea’s domestic offshore wind industry and expertise.
This order is a strategic win for Vestas as it competes globally in the rapidly expanding offshore wind sector. The company, which has installed more wind power capacity than any other globally at over 197 GW, brings decades of experience to South Korea’s coastal waters. The successful execution of the Shinan-Ui project will not only deliver clean, homegrown energy for South Korea but also establish a critical reference site for Vestas in Asia, paving the way for future growth in the region’s ambitious offshore wind pipeline.
