US Navy Picks AI Firm to Build Low-Cost Near-Hypersonic Missile with Big Strike Range.

The US Navy has selected a subsidiary of Palladyne AI Corp. to develop a new low-cost, near-hypersonic missile, marking a significant step in next-generation strike capabilities.

The contract has been awarded to GuideTech, a unit of Palladyne AI, to develop an air-launched system known as the Air-Launched Rapid Response Missile (ALRRM).

The project aims to create a missile that combines high speed, long range, and affordability. This comes at a time when the US military is focusing on cost-effective solutions without compromising operational strength.

The ALRRM is expected to address this need by delivering near-hypersonic performance at a much lower cost than existing systems.

According to the company, the missile is designed to travel beyond 350 nautical miles when launched from high altitude. It is also expected to maintain a sustained speed exceeding Mach 4. This places it close to hypersonic speeds, which are typically defined as Mach 5 and above.

The missile will carry a 150-pound warhead and use an air-breathing solid-fuel ramjet engine, a technology known for its efficiency at high speeds.

The design also focuses on meeting strict size and weight limits. This allows the missile to be deployed from modern fighter aircraft, including fifth-generation stealth jets. The compact form factor is expected to enhance flexibility and operational reach during missions.

Ben Wolff, President and CEO of Palladyne AI, highlighted the project’s importance. He said the US needs advanced missiles that are both high-performing and affordable. He added that the ALRRM is designed to meet this demand by offering a balance of speed, range, and payload capacity.

He also noted that the system could create a new class of strike weapons for the military.

Wolff said the missile will support deep-theater strike missions while maintaining compatibility with stealth aircraft. He emphasized that no current system combines these features at such a cost-effective level. He believes this gives the ALRRM a unique position in the evolving defense landscape.

Palladyne AI, based in the US, focuses on advanced technologies such as embodied artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and avionics. The company develops solutions for defense and industrial applications, with a strong emphasis on security and compliance with government standards.

Its AI platforms are built to operate in complex and high-risk environments. These systems enable real-time decision-making, even in situations with limited communication.

The company also works on integrating sensor data and adaptive AI models to improve coordination across air, land, and sea operations.
