Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after Iran claimed that the US and Israel carried out an attack on its key nuclear site at the Natanz nuclear facility on Saturday.
Iranian officials said the strike targeted the Shahid Ahmadi Roshan uranium enrichment complex, one of the country’s most important nuclear installations.
According to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, the attack took place early in the morning. Officials described it as a “criminal act” carried out jointly by the US and Israel.
The statement, reported by Tasnim News Agency, confirmed that the site was hit but assured that there was no leakage of radioactive material following the strike.
Authorities stressed that the situation is under control. They said there is no danger to people living near the facility.
Reports also confirmed that radiation levels outside the site remain normal, easing fears of a nuclear disaster in the region.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, also acknowledged the incident.
In a statement, the agency said Iran had informed it about the attack. It confirmed that no increase in off-site radiation levels had been detected.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi urged all sides to exercise restraint. He warned that further military action near nuclear facilities could risk a serious nuclear accident.
However, details about how the attack was carried out remain unclear. Iranian authorities have not specified the type of weapons used or the extent of structural damage inside the facility. Analysts say the lack of clarity suggests the situation is still developing.

Natanz Facility
The Natanz facility is strategically important to Iran’s nuclear program. It is the country’s main uranium enrichment site, where centrifuges are used to increase uranium purity.
This process is crucial for nuclear energy, but can also be used to develop nuclear weapons if enriched to higher levels. Because of this dual-use nature, Natanz has long been at the center of international concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
This is not the first time the site has been targeted. The facility was previously struck during a recent conflict between Iran and Israel.

Satellite images from earlier incidents showed damage to buildings, including parts of the underground enrichment infrastructure. The United Nations had also reported recent damage to the site earlier this month.
The US has repeatedly stated that its goal, along with Israel, is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The White House has described this as a key objective of its ongoing military strategy in the region.
Meanwhile, global reactions are emerging. Russia strongly condemned the latest attack. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova called it a blatant violation of international law and urged an immediate halt to such actions.

On the other hand, Israel signaled that military operations may intensify. Defense Minister Israel Katz said that strikes by Israeli and US forces would increase in the coming days. He stated that the focus would remain on targeting Iran’s military and strategic infrastructure.
As tensions rise, the situation remains fragile. The risk of further escalation continues to worry the international community, especially given the potential dangers linked to nuclear facilities.
