A US F-35 Lightning II fighter jet made an emergency landing at a US airbase in the Middle East after completing a combat mission over Iran, according to US military officials.
The aircraft landed safely on Thursday, and the pilot is in stable condition. A spokesperson for US Central Command confirmed the development and said the situation is under investigation.
Captain Tim Hawkins said, “We are aware of reports that a US F-35 aircraft conducted an emergency landing after flying a combat mission over Iran. The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot is in stable condition. This incident is under investigation.”
Reports by CNN, quoting unnamed sources, suggested that the aircraft may have been hit during the mission. However, US officials have not confirmed the cause of the emergency landing. Separately, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed that it had targeted a US aircraft, though no direct link has been officially established.

The incident comes amid rising tensions and continued fighting between the US and Iran since February 28.
Reports indicate that the US has lost around 12 MQ-9 Reaper drones during the conflict. In another development, US officials said that five KC-135 refuelling aircraft were damaged in a missile strike at a base in Saudi Arabia, although these claims remain unverified.
Earlier in the conflict, three F-15E Strike Eagle aircraft were lost in a friendly fire incident involving an F/A-18 Hornet. All six crew members survived after ejecting safely.
According to available data, at least 13 US service members have been killed and nearly 200 injured in the conflict. On the Iranian side, local health authorities report over 1,400 deaths and more than 18,000 injuries.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that America’s military goals remain the same. He said, “Our objectives, given directly from our America First president, remain exactly what they were on day one.”
The US aims to destroy Iran’s missile launch systems, weaken its defence industry and naval power, and stop it from developing nuclear weapons. Officials said the US has already carried out strikes on more than 7,000 targets inside Iran, including mine-laying vessels and submarines.
US President Donald Trump said he has no immediate plans to deploy additional troops. He added that even if such decisions are made, they may not be publicly disclosed.
Meanwhile, General Dan Caine said US forces are progressing steadily and striking deeper into Iranian territory. However, he acknowledged that Iran still retains significant missile capabilities.
Why the F-35 Matters in Modern Warfare
The F-35 Lightning II is one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. Developed by Lockheed Martin, it is a fifth-generation stealth aircraft designed for multiple roles, including air combat, ground strikes, and intelligence missions.
Its key strength is stealth technology, which allows it to avoid radar detection. The aircraft is equipped with advanced sensors, data fusion systems, and precision weapons. It can operate in highly contested environments where older aircraft may struggle.

Each F-35 costs up to $100 million, making it a critical asset for the US military and its allies. Since its combat deployment began in 2018, there have been no confirmed cases of an F-35 being hit by enemy fire, making this incident particularly significant if confirmed.
The emergency landing of an F-35 after a mission over Iran marks a serious moment in the ongoing conflict. While the pilot is safe, questions remain about what caused the incident. If the aircraft was indeed hit, it could signal a shift in the battlefield dynamics.
As investigations continue, the situation highlights the risks involved even for the most advanced military systems.
