The US has deployed B-52 Stratofortress bombers for deep strike missions over Iran under Operation Epic Fury.
The move follows weeks of strikes that dismantled key Iranian air defenses. It solves a military problem: allowing large, non-stealth bombers to operate safely in previously contested airspace.
The news is that US B-52 bombers are now flying directly over Iranian territory. This marks a sharp escalation from contested airspace to sustained deep-strike operations. The first missions were confirmed by Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine on March 31, 2026.
US Central Command forces achieved localized air superiority after earlier phases focused on destroying Iran’s radar coverage, command nodes, and long-range missile batteries. Assets like F-35A fighters, EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft, and cyber capabilities helped blind Iranian detection systems.

Iran’s air defenses — including the S-300PMU2 and domestically built Bavar-373 — posed a serious threat to non-stealth aircraft. By degrading these systems, the US opened a window for B-52s, which are large and radar-visible, to operate with reduced risk.
The B-52H Stratofortress can carry up to 70,000 pounds of mixed ordnance. This includes JDAM precision-guided bombs, AGM-158 JASSM cruise missiles, and AGM-86C air-launched cruise missiles. A single bomber can attack multiple target sets in a single mission: infrastructure, missile production sites, command bunkers, and logistics hubs.
Real-world use includes high-volume saturation strikes and precision engagements. The bomber also delivers a strategic message: the US can impose large-scale effects at will over Iran. Aerial refueling by KC-135 and KC-46 tankers enables a continuous bomber presence, turning the B-52 into a persistent strike node.
The B-52 is not stealthy. It relies on air superiority already won by other platforms. Also, the name “Operation Epic Fury” is not an officially confirmed US military codename — the article notes that it may be informal or unofficial.

The B-52’s role is distinct from the B-2 (stealth penetration) and B-1B (high-speed flexible strikes). The B-52 exploits air dominance to maximize destructive output at scale. Its introduction signals a decisive shift in control of the air domain, with direct implications for the regional balance of power.
