North Korea’s Armored Weapons Institute has tested a new battle tank equipped with an active protection system. The system is designed to intercept incoming missiles and drones.
North Korea has demonstrated a new battle tank capable of shooting down incoming threats. The test took place on March 29, 2026, under the supervision of leader Kim Jong Un. State media reported that the tank’s defense system worked perfectly.

The Armored Weapons Institute in Pyongyang developed the tank. According to KCNA, the country’s official news agency, the vehicle is a “new-type” main battle tank. It appears to be part of the M2020 family of armored vehicles.
Modern battlefields are dangerous for tanks. They face threats like anti-tank missiles, loitering munitions, and drones. These weapons can attack from above or from the side, making them hard to stop with traditional armor alone.

The tank uses a hard-kill active protection system. Sensors detect an incoming threat, calculate its path, and launch an interceptor. The interceptor destroys the missile or drone in the air before it hits the tank.
The demonstration showed the tank defeating several types of weapons. These included shoulder-fired rockets, top-attack missiles, and drone-like munitions. The system was tested against threats from multiple directions simultaneously.
North Korea claims the system has a 100 percent success rate. However, this figure has not been independently verified. The demonstration likely took place under controlled conditions, unlike real combat.

If real, this capability would be a major step forward. A tank that can defeat modern anti-tank weapons is harder to destroy. It would allow armored units to operate more safely in urban areas and against ambushes. This suggests North Korea is focused on modernizing its conventional forces for modern warfare.
