China has achieved a major engineering milestone with its independently developed ‘Linghang’ shield tunneling machine, the world’s largest-diameter model for high-speed railways. The machine has completed a continuous 10,000-meter bore under the Yangtze River for the Chongming-Taizhou tunnel, setting a new global record and nearing the final stretch of its journey.
In a feat of modern engineering, a Chinese-made mechanical titan has quietly made history beneath one of the world’s great rivers. The ‘Linghang’ shield tunneling machine, a 15-meter-diameter behemoth, has successfully tunneled 10,000 meters under the Yangtze River, marking the first time a machine of this size has achieved such a continuous bore. With only 1,000 meters left to the southern bank, the project is on the cusp of completing a critical link that will carry high-speed trains at 350 kilometers per hour, reported China Media Group (CMG).
This isn’t just about digging a long hole. The Chongming-Taizhou tunnel is a pivotal piece of infrastructure for the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Once operational, it will dramatically shorten travel times between major economic hubs like Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hefei, integrating regional development. The ‘Linghang’ machine, however, is the star of the show, representing the pinnacle of China’s tunneling technology.

What sets this machine apart is its sophisticated intelligence. According to the Science and Technology Daily, it is equipped with the world’s most advanced “brain” system. This system enables fully algorithmic, unmanned intelligent tunneling, making autonomous decisions on pressure control, slurry circulation, and posture adjustment. This technological leap has made operations far more stable than manual control and allowed the team to set a world record for a monthly advance of 718 meters in a high-speed railway tunnel of this class.
The achievement underscores China’s dominance in the field of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), once dominated by foreign manufacturers. Dubbed the “king of construction machinery,” modern Chinese TBMs like the ‘Linghang’ are so versatile they are nicknamed “transformers,” capable of navigating vertical, inclined, and curved paths with precision, noted the People’s Daily. Since breaking the foreign monopoly with its first domestically developed 15-meter-class TBM in 2017, China has rolled out increasingly larger models, including the 16.6-meter-plus ‘Jianghai’. Chinese-manufactured TBMs now command nearly 70 percent of the global market.

The 10,000-meter milestone is more than a construction update; it’s a testament to strategic industrial progress. It demonstrates a complete mastery of ultra-large shield tunneling technology—from manufacturing and software to operational execution. As the ‘Linghang’ machine approaches the “final kilometer,” it carves out more than just a rail tunnel; it solidifies China’s position as a global leader in heavy infrastructure innovation, paving the way for future mega-projects at home and abroad.
