A pilotless electric air taxi recently completed a successful test flight across San Francisco Bay, marking a major step toward clean and fast city transport.
The aircraft, developed by Joby Aviation, took off smoothly from Oakland International Airport during early morning hours. It rose vertically into the sky and moved steadily across the bay, showing both stability and control.
The aircraft flew over open water and reached the far side of the bay within minutes. It then turned north, flying near the Marin Headlands with the San Francisco skyline in the background. The test also included a pass near the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, highlighting its ability to operate safely in complex urban airspace.
One of the most striking features of the flight was its silence. Unlike traditional aircraft, the electric motors produced only a soft hum. This makes the air taxi far less disruptive for people on the ground.

The company has now launched its 2026 Electric Skies Tour. During this tour, the same aircraft will visit several cities across the United States. The goal is to show people how the technology works and how it could fit into daily life.
Joby plans to introduce its services without needing major new infrastructure. This could help accelerate adoption in cities with limited space.
Regulatory progress is also moving forward. Joby has been selected for a White House-backed program that supports early air taxi operations in multiple states, including Arizona and Utah.
The company is working closely with authorities to complete final certifications. Officials expect more test flights with regulators before the end of 2026.

To support future demand, Joby is expanding its manufacturing capacity. A new 700,000-square-foot factory is under construction in Dayton, Ohio. This facility is expected to produce hundreds of aircraft each year.
The company aims to reach a production rate of four aircraft per month by 2027. Additional operational sites in California are also being planned.
This successful test flight offers a glimpse into what urban transport could look like in the near future. Quiet, fast, and efficient air taxis may soon become part of everyday life. If regulatory approvals continue on track, passengers could experience this new mode of travel sooner than expected.
