China’s first domestically developed quantum computer operating system, Origin Pilot, is now available for public download. The move marks a significant step in the nation’s push for technology independence in advanced computing.
The Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center announced the release on Wednesday. Origin Pilot is an open-source quantum operating system that aims to lower the barriers for developers and researchers working with quantum computers.
The operating system was created by Origin Quantum Computing Technology Co, a company based in Hefei. The firm also developed China’s third-generation superconducting quantum computer, Origin Wukong.
Guo Guoping, chief scientist at Origin Quantum and director of the Anhui Quantum Computing Engineering Research Center, called a quantum operating system the “soft heart” of the quantum computing ecosystem.

Quantum computers require specialized software to manage their basic functions. Origin Pilot handles tasks like resource scheduling and makes sure the hardware and software work together smoothly.
The system supports key features needed for practical use. These include running multiple quantum tasks at the same time and automatically calibrating qubits, which are the basic units of quantum information. This improves overall system efficiency.
Dou Menghan, head of the research team, said users can download the system from the official website. It works with different types of quantum chips, including superconducting qubits, trapped ions, and neutral atoms. Developers can use programming frameworks like QPanda to run jobs across various quantum chips for research or commercial projects.
The system was first launched in 2021 and has been upgraded multiple times. It is already deployed on the company’s Origin Wukong quantum computers and available to external users.
Currently, there is no widely adopted quantum operating system that users can download and install locally. Major US companies like IBM and Google offer quantum programming tools and cloud services, but their underlying systems are not available for public download, according to the research center.

By making Origin Pilot openly available, the company hopes to help research institutions, universities, and developers worldwide access a quantum computing system developed in China. The open-source model is expected to speed up innovation and support the growth of China’s quantum computing ecosystem.
Guo said quantum technology is now identified as a key future industry in China’s development plans. Quantum computing has moved beyond the laboratory and is entering a phase of real-world use and industrialization. The release of Origin Pilot reflects this shift from closed-door innovation to broader ecosystem development.
