China has introduced an intelligent construction solution for tunnels built with the drill-and-blast method.

The system combines on-site sensors, edge computing and cloud-based decision-making to manage construction activities. China Railway Group said the technology is already being used on major infrastructure projects.

The solution was developed for tunnels and underground engineering projects. It brings several digital technologies into one construction system, allowing data from work sites to be processed and used during operations. The approach links physical construction activities with digital monitoring and management tools.

On-site sensing is used to collect information from construction areas. Edge computing processes some of this information closer to where it is generated, reducing the need to send every piece of data to a remote system. Cloud-based decision-making then supports wider analysis and coordination.

The system is designed to cover several construction processes. It also supports coordinated management of project operations and faster decisions across multiple enterprise systems.

Applied To Railway Projects

China Railway Tunnel Group, a major developer of the solution, said it is already being applied to projects. One example is the Changsha-Ganzhou high-speed railway, where the system is being used in tunnel construction.

The Changsha-Ganzhou railway is part of China’s expanding high-speed rail network. Its use of the intelligent tunnel system provides a working example of how digital tools can be introduced into large underground construction projects.

The company described the approach as a replicable model for intelligent construction in tunnel and underground engineering. This means similar systems can be adapted for other projects with comparable construction requirements.

AI Reshapes Tunnel Work

Tunnel construction using the drill-and-blast method involves repeated activities such as drilling, blasting and removing excavated material. These operations take place in changing underground conditions, making continuous monitoring and coordination important for project management.

Digital systems can bring information from different parts of a project into a common management structure. When combined with artificial intelligence, these systems can also support data analysis and faster operational decisions.

China Railway Tunnel Group said advances in artificial intelligence are driving digital and intelligent changes across the tunnel engineering industry. The company’s new solution places sensing, computing and decision-making within a single framework.

Next Stage Of Development

The company plans to continue developing digital and intelligent technologies for tunnel and underground engineering. Its current projects will provide practical settings for applying and refining these systems.

The wider use of such technology is expected to connect more construction activities with digital monitoring and automated decision support. Projects such as the Changsha-Ganzhou high-speed railway will help demonstrate how intelligent construction systems can be applied across large tunnel projects.
