China’s Qinling Antarctic Station Reaches Green Energy Milestone

China’s newest Antarctic research station is now getting about half of its electricity from renewable energy, even during the long polar night. The achievement comes from China’s Qinling Station, which uses a mix of wind, solar, hydrogen, and battery storage to reduce diesel fuel use in one of the world’s harshest environments.

China’s Qinling Station, the country’s fifth Antarctic research base, officially began operations in 2024. Wang Tao, Director of Qinling Station, said the station can meet around 50% of its electricity needs with renewable energy during the polar night. The Global Times first reported the announcement, while Reuters has also previously covered the station’s clean energy system.

Running research stations in Antarctica is difficult because of extreme weather and limited fuel supplies. Most stations rely heavily on diesel generators, which produce carbon emissions and require fuel to be shipped over long distances. Qinling Station aims to reduce both environmental impact and transport costs.

The station uses a hybrid energy system that combines wind turbines, solar panels, hydrogen energy, battery storage, and diesel generators. During the Antarctic summer, when sunlight is available all day, renewable energy can provide more than 60% of the station’s electricity. During the polar night, solar power stops, but wind power and stored energy continue to supply about half of the station’s needs when wind conditions are good.

The new system also reduces fuel use. According to Wang Tao, the station could save at least 200 tons of diesel every year compared with a traditional power system. That also means fewer fuel shipments from China, which are expensive and travel more than 10,000 kilometers to reach Antarctica. Reuters noted that the project supports climate research while improving the sustainability of Antarctic operations.

The system still has limits. Renewable energy depends on weather conditions, especially wind during the polar night. Because of this, diesel generators remain an important backup to ensure the station has reliable electricity throughout the year. The Global Times also notes that the station uses multiple energy sources together to maintain stable power.

The main breakthrough is that Qinling Station can supply about half of its electricity from renewable energy even during Antarctica’s dark winter. This shows that advanced hybrid energy systems can support scientific research in remote locations while reducing fuel use and emissions. The technology could also help future research stations become more energy efficient.

According to the Global Times, Qinling Station builds on earlier renewable energy work at China’s Taishan Station by adding hydrogen energy and a more advanced microgrid.
