PrSM Changed the Game in War; Why the Pentagon Is Suddenly Rushing More

The US is moving to expand its stockpile of the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) after the weapon reportedly proved its effectiveness during recent military operations involving Iran.

Defense officials say the missile was used in the early hours of the war, delivering precise and rapid strikes against key targets.

Despite its strong performance, current procurement levels remain limited. This has raised concerns within the Pentagon about future readiness, especially as global tensions continue to rise.

Combat Debut Highlights Capabilities

According to US defense officials, the ground-launched PrSM was deployed as part of coordinated strikes alongside air and naval forces. The missile was used to strike strategic targets, including air defenses and command centers.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, General Dan Caine, described the strikes in clear terms. He said, “Forces fired precision standoff weapons that were measured, deliberate, precise, and lethal.”

Soon after, US Central Command confirmed that PrSM played a role in strikes against Iranian targets. The missile’s performance has been seen as a major milestone in its operational history.

What Makes PrSM Different

The Precision Strike Missile is designed as a next-generation replacement for older systems, such as the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS). It is launched from widely used platforms such as HIMARS and MLRS.

One of its key advantages is range. PrSM can strike targets at distances beyond earlier treaty limits. It also has a smaller design, allowing launch systems to carry more missiles at once.

Mobility is another critical strength. Ground-based launchers can move quickly and are harder for enemies to detect and target. This makes them more survivable compared to fixed air bases or naval assets in vulnerable zones.

Role in Modern Warfare

Military experts say PrSM is especially valuable at the start of a conflict. It can quickly disable enemy air defenses and command systems. This creates safer conditions for aircraft to operate later.

Its speed and quick response time also make it effective against sudden or mobile threats. Unlike aircraft, which may not always be immediately available, PrSM launchers can remain deployed and ready.

In the Middle East, missiles launched from the Arabian Peninsula can reach deep into Iran. This gives US forces added flexibility and reduces pressure on air and naval units.

Beyond the Middle East, PrSM is seen as a key asset in other regions as well. In the Indo-Pacific, it could help counter China’s growing military presence. Future versions of the missile are expected to include advanced targeting systems capable of hitting moving naval targets.

In Europe, the missile could strengthen deterrence against Russia. Recent conflicts have shown the effectiveness of long-range strike systems against advanced air defenses. A more capable PrSM would further complicate enemy planning.

Despite its advantages, the number of PrSM missiles currently being produced is relatively low. The US procured fewer than 100 units in fiscal year 2024. While production is set to increase in the coming years, officials say it may still fall short of operational needs.

This comes at a time when US military stockpiles are already under pressure due to ongoing global commitments. Failing to scale up production could weaken long-term readiness.

Defense experts are urging the US government to act quickly. They recommend increasing both procurement and production capacity. This would ensure that the military can sustain operations while preparing for future conflicts.

There is also a broader concern about long-term planning. For years, limited procurement has led to shortages in critical munitions. With rising threats in multiple regions, this approach is no longer sustainable.

The recent use of the Precision Strike Missile marks an important step in modern warfare. Its range, accuracy, and flexibility make it a powerful tool across different theaters of operation.

During this global war crisis, the focus is now on ensuring that enough of these missiles are available. The coming months could see major policy decisions that shape how the US prepares for future conflicts.
